Reading Glasses

Postby sunny » August 1, 2010, 6:36 pm

Can anyone recommend a shop in Udon Thani that sells reading glasses? I'm not after anything too expensive because I'm always loosing or breaking them. ;) Thanks in advance. :D

I found the least expensive at some of the concession stands in Big C & Tesco (if at Big C, take escalator next to Dairy Queen, at top make a left and you'll see a concession stand that sell reading glasses). Some bookstores also carry them and you may find them at the night market. If you want inexpensive that last place I would go to is an optics shop.

There's a little guy at the Tang Ngee Soong market (the big one) that has a kiosk in the entrance lobby. My mother-in-law got talking to him and he checked out her eyes and made up a set of reading glasses for her. 200 Baht. Different lenses for each eye, he went back to his van and made them up. She is pleased as punch. First set of glasses she has ever had.

Of course, this was not the farang price as I was nowhere near while the negotiations took place, just showed up to pay the bill. (We do that all the time, saves lots of money). I may have screwed up when I told him that in the US I would have paid at least 3,000 baht for the same. That's got to start him thinking when another farang shows up. Sorry guys, I may have blown it with my big mouth.

I've certainly bought one pair for about 200 baht one floor up in the Complex - a stall by the escalator, rather than a proper shop. I also know I've stupidly paid a well-known optician's chain a hell of a lot more for the same quality!

The market (Bo-bay) next to Global House has a shop that sells reading glasses. They supply wholesale but also sell individual pairs @ 80 baht. They are the same glasses that are for sale in other places around town for 150 - 200 baht.

OT................. \:D/
