Red Eye Entertainment Clubs (Taa Wen Daeng)

Postby Laan Yaa Mo » May 12, 2009, 7:27 am

Well this song is about those Red Eye (Taa Wen Daeng) nightclubs that you see dotted all over Thailand including Udonthani, Khon Kaen and Bangkok. These usually open late and close around 6 the next morning.

I have gone to the one in Khon Kaen but have been warned that all sorts of unpleasant things take place in the club in Udonthani. A good-looking grandmother and her 20-year old niece invited me to join them in the Red Eye in Udonthani, but I let the opportunity pass.

Here Jintara Poonlarb is singing, 'At the Red Eye, we are on the same wavelength'. Indeed.

BM and Git, these are more hard-drinking establishments than they are devoted to swilling beer.

Aardvark, I hope your wife approves of this song more than she did of the monks chanting.

I forgot the name of the street and the intersection.

However, if you leave the Robinson Complex cross the street and turn left, it is at the end of the block. The crowd is mostly Thais.

In Khon Kaen, there was live music, and a very friendly crowd composed, for the most part, of university students fuelled by alcohol.

Officially, the place closed down at 2 in the morning, but you could go to rooms at the back where a few hundred students smoke and drank until 6 in the morning.

I thought that I would feel out of place there (62 years old), but everyone male and female made me feel welcome and I did not spend a cent.

Dawng Dang is how it is pronounced to my Falang ear in Udon. Tilo describes how to get there very accurately.
I have never been to the Khon Kaen one but have been to the Udon one on many occasions.
I have never had anything but fun & enjoyment there - although there is often some Thai on Thai 'issues' outside at the end of the night. The one in Udon does close at 2 a.m. - it is central & so cannot draw too much attention to itself I would think. Live bands (pretty good too) & DJ when bands take a break. Large place, but nearly always busy, even mid-week -VERY busy at weekends.
I have always gone with friends, but the last couple of times I noticed individual Falangs come in & they didn't seem to have any problem enjoying them selves either.

A few years ago I spent a few evenings at Dawng Dang. The foreigners there, mostly young folks, appeared to have a good time. All Thai music except one rendition of West Virginia - Country Roads - Mountain Momma. There were several Thai bands that rotated sessions. So loud that I couldn't hear a word spoken by a few Thais that stopped by to smile and chat. They sold popcorn which is a favorite of mine. Location was good for me as I was staying at The City Lodge, maybe two hundred yards away. Didn't notice any bad drunks or nastiness.

I used to go to this nightclub Sawahn Dang (Red sun) couple of years ago (When I was a young man) Good bands! But not once did They play a farang song.
I am often told,The Thais dont want Farangs there.I dont feel safe there. Now I go to" Yellow bird" nightclub( below chereonsee Hotel.
Good bands there, never seen any trouble....No popcorn...but do excellent plate french fries ;)

Red Eye is a new one on me... I always thought it was Red Sun (ตะวัน แดง). I have heard people refer to it as Benmore because of the big sign outside.

That is a good point about the name of these clubs, and it was a bit confusing to me when I tried to translate the words to English.

In the video, you can see a red sun in the background, which lends credence to the theory that it should be called, 'Red Sun'.

However, if you look at the Thai characters in the title, 'dtaa' or 'taa' is the word for 'eye', not for 'sun'.

Whoever translated it should not have spilt the words. If they had put Dta waan then it would be sweet eye. They should have transliterated it to just one word, Dtawan = Sun.

But that is not the word for sweet, 'waan'.

The word 'waen(wen)', your 'waan' is what stumped me in the translation. If the word was written, 'waen taa' instead of 'taa waen', it would mean eye-glasses.

Perhaps the people who wrote the Thai characters made an error, as Red Sun makes more sense when you view the video.

I must start to work now

I shouldn't have mentioned Dta waan (sweet eye), I just threw a spanner in the works. That's what happens when you reply in haste on your way out the door... #-o #-o #-o

Irish Alan and others, I just made a hasty telephone call to Udonthani and was reprimanded for deluding others with my incorrect translation.

Indeed, I made an error in splitting the two words.

The correct title, is Red Sun, not Red Eye.

Please accept my humble apologies for this gross error. 55555

Red eye is what you get when you scratch your eye when you have traces of chillie on your finger....and also the preferred drink of cowboys.

Please accept my humble apologies for this gross error.

Tilo, where is the one in Khon Kaen? I used to go to a place called Party House. It was open till the early hours but no live music.

I thought Dawan Daeng in Udon was going to close, what with all the hyverluting developments going on across from the Compleck, is it still open?
