Regional Stereotyping

Postby BobHelm » January 16, 2011, 9:58 am

I didn't quite know what to title this...but here goes.
For anyone who does not know of it other than as the home of a couple of football clubs Liverpool is quite a large North Western English city of some 500,000 people. People born & bred there have a quite distinct regional English accent that is even easily recognised & differentiated even from the county Lancashire accent which it was originally part of. Because of this distinction over the years a number of light entertainment television shows have stereotyped the 'typical' Liverpudlian in a humorous, but not exactly flattering manner. Indeed Liverpool has produced a number of successful comedians who have themselves reinforced that viewpoint with their style of humour.
So he is often portrayed as a rather harmless but lazy beer can drinking individual who has never had a job in his life & is more than happy to end his years on 'the social' - social security payments. More likely to get out of his TV viewing chair to nick the wheels off a neighbours car than to seek honest employment.
This headline will come as quite a shock to that viewpoint.
Land Rover Jaguar job applications 'overwhelm' Halewood

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-me ... e-12198972

14,000 have applied for 1,500 new jobs at the Merseyside's Jaguar Land Rover car plant.

More stereotyping I know but as the group is owned by India's biggest car maker , Tata. Do you think they could all be family members ?

I think that most of the population of India has settled in Blackburn rather than Liverpool TB... :D

Dont you just hate stereotyping like this ...... NO !!

Being a hard working Scunny lad i thort the article was pretty dam accurate ref scousers and if you read further it does say that 13,993 of the applicants only aplied cos the benefits office made em the other 7 were all Polish .

I have ahd to suffer this stereotyping all my life coming from SCUNTHORPE people often without even meeting me think im young , handsome , slim and intelligent .... so theyre spot on then !! as for Scunthonian women most are carrot crunching mingers (except my gran and the old dear in the off licence who sold me cider when only 14 years old )

mash ...... likes jokey scousers really

The poms can keep their home-bred profiling of Liverpudlians. :D

Fortunately the rest of the world stereotypes Liverpool by:

- The Beatles
- Gerry & the Pacemakers
- The Searchers
- Cilla Black
- Billy J Kramer
- Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
- etc etc

Well Jack, you can add shipbuilding yards, rows of homes that look the same, the Irish and poverty to that stereotype list. Kramer and the Facemakers were not the greatest groups in the world. I wonder where the Animals, Moody Blues, Procol Harem, the Swinging Blue Jeans and the Dave Clark V originated from in the great land of England?

Scousers are resourceful. When OT had reason to go to Liverpool several years ago he had his mobile phone stolen by pick pockets, his car broken into, and a number of second hand items offered to him at remarkable prices. I even had a jacket offered to me which was lifted from a chair in a pub whilst the owner was still taking a pee. OT's not stereotyping, just saying what happened.

OT............ \:D/

I think that says more about the places you frequent than the people of Liverpool.

Whilst not wishing to stereo anyone i did come across this interesting fact .

Apparently a real ccckernee is someone that was conceived in a Trael Lodge hotel and born within the sound of Bow Bells in London , a real scouser must have been conceived in a taxi or night club fire exit and born within a 5 mile radius of the nearest dole office ..... HOWEVER ..... a REAL SCUNTHONIAN conceived in first class on an aeroplane or intercity express (i was the first) and born within a 10 mile radius of the famous Scunny steel works , the reason for the chiselled good looks , steel like willpower and sense of humour .

SO lets recap ..... a chirpy cockernee eats JELLYED EELS , cheeky scouser occupation -SHOP LIFTER ,,, and a hardworking , honest handsome and slim SCUNTHONIAN .

Mash ....... seahawk , Goodison , the ousted 747 ....... wana buy some wheels

The only people left living within the sound of Bow church bells now, are Pakistani's. It won't be long before Bow church is converted into a mosque.
