With no end in sight to the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) demonstrations, there has inevitably been a dramatic increase in crime in Bangkok, according to Metropolitan Police deputy chief Chakthip Chaijinda.

Pol Maj-Gen Chakthip ascribed this increase in crime to the PAD protests, which have so far lasted more than six months.

A significant portion of these crimes are bomb attacks linked to the demonstrations.

This was particularly evident following the violent clashes on Oct 7 between police and protesters who had besieged parliament. More than 30 apparently related crimes were reported across Bangkok, ranging from smoke bombs to grenade attacks.

With the political conflict intensifying, Pol Maj-Gen Chakthip warned: "Today, bombings can occur anywhere and anybody can become a victim.

"It's hard to identify those behind the bomb attack. Worse, it's absolutely an uphill task for police to conduct an investigation when political motivations come into play."

Pol Maj-Gen Chakthip said attempts to investigate bomb attacks against the PAD have been made difficult by the anti-government group's reluctance to cooperate fully with police.

"On one occasion, a bomb exploded at 3am, but investigators were not allowed in to the blast scene until 10am," he said.

"By that time, the evidence was almost gone because PAD guards had already gathered it. Only scraps of evidence remained, which was insufficient for investigative work."

He has tried to impress on the PAD the difference between a bomb disposal squad and riot police.

The most dangerous period is between 1am and 4am, when the majority of bomb attacks have occurred.

Pol Maj-Gen Chakthip said the types of bombs vary from low-intensity devices without shrapnel aimed only at causing panic, to explosives weighing over 225 grammes with shrapnel, which can maim and kill.

He said another lethal weapon in use has been grenades fired from an M79 launcher, which requires professional and experienced handling.

Pol Maj-Gen Chakthip said the Metropolitan Police Bureau is considering calling in Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol for questioning about his links to certain bomb attacks after he made repeated references to a threat.

Attempts to investigate the death of PAD guard chief Methee Chatmontri in a car bomb on Oct 7 have been hindered by the PAD's lack of cooperation in witness questioning, he said.

He dismissed speculation by the PAD that M79 grenades fired by police were the cause of Pol Lt-Col Methee's death.

Generally, this grenade would leave shrapnel in the body of the vehicle when it explodes, but none was found on the wrecked jeep, he said.

Besides, explosives from C-4 to TNT were found inside his vehicle, Pol Maj-Gen Chakthip added.

The top official at the tourism ministry said on Monday that 350,000 foreign visitors and Thai tourists are stranded inside Thailand by the airport closure, and the number is increasing daily.

"Around 350,000 passengers remain stranded in Thailand since the closing of the airports," said Sasithara Pichaichannarong, permanent secretary at the tourism ministry, in an interview with the AFP news agency.

That figure includes Thais who were booked on flights out of the kingdom.

About 10,000 Thai nationals are estimated to be stuck abroad by the airport closures, an official from the foreign ministry said.

Earlier, Tourism and Sport Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said that the number of stranded foreign tourists in Thailand has reached 240,000.

The toll will continue to rise daily and exponentially, he said, as more tourists reach the end oif their holidays, with too few planes to take them out.

Mr Weerasak held a press conference at the Bitec Exhibition Hall in Bang Na, which has been turned into a massive, confused check-in centre for foreigners trying to leave Thailadn.

Flights arrive and leave at U-Tapao air base, 150 kilometres to the east.

Some tourists are also flying out of provincial airports including Phuket and Chiang Mai. France, Spain and Australia have sent special flights to evacuate desperate citizens stuck in Thailand.

Passengers have been advised to check in at least seven hours before their flight time, to allow for the drive to U-Tapao.

The main Suvarnabhumi international airport has been shut since last Tuesday when protesters besieged it in their bid to topple the premier, and a day later they stormed the Don Mueang domestic airport.

She said that the tourism ministry would on Tuesday ask the cabinet to give them one billion baht ($28 million) to fund repatriation efforts for stranded foreigners, and to bring back the Thais stuck abroad.

"We have currently received only a 10-million-baht budget for this operation, which is certainly not sufficient," said Ms Sasithara/

The government has warned that the week-long siege of the airports will cost around one million jobs and about 50 per cent of the expected tourist arrivals. (with reports by AFP)

I bet some are P!ssed up on the duty free booze...and have put on a few kilos eating all that free food KFC.Burgers,Ice Cream, Duty Free Chocolates,all running around in designer sunglasses and clothing...still i bet they arn't smoking all the ciggies, well its a big fine if they get caught smoking inside the terminal building, so they probably won't risk it.
i bet its a real mess and takes a week to clear up and check for bombs wont be open for a while

Thai protesters flock from Prime Minister's office to airports
Anti-government protesters in Bangkok have begun ending their three month occupation of the prime minister's offices in to consolidate their grip on the city's airports.

The hardline group, calling itself the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), says it will not allow the airports to reopen until Thailand's elected government steps down.

Their latest move follows a string of recent bombings at the group's protest sites, particularly Government House, in which injured 51 people were injured on Sunday alone. On several occaisions the PAD's "guards has openned fire. The protesters blame government supporters for the explosions but it is still unclear who is behind them.

"It's too risky to stay at Government House because of repeated attacks against us," said Anchalee Paireerak, a spokeswoman for the PAD. "All of us have started to move now, we expect to complete the movement this evening. We will go to both Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports," she added.

The situation in Thailand remains extremely tense with rumours swirling and several possible scenarios which could unfold over the coming days.

None of them provide any comfort for the 100 000 foreign tourists, including over 5 000 Britons, stranded by the week long closure of one of Asia's busiest airports.

The general manager of Suvarnabhumi international airport, which normally handles 700 flights a day, said it would take at least a week to restore compromised security and computer systems after the protesters leave the site, which may not happen soon.

"Normally, checking the IT systems takes one week. We have to check, recheck, check, recheck," said Serirat Prasutanond. If problems are discovered reopenning the airport could take even longer, he added.

The most dramatic new rumour is of a military kidnap plot against prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, reported on the front page of the fiercely anti-government Nation newspaper.

"A Special Branch Police source said Somchai had departed Chiang Mai after his security team received intelligence reports that some military groups wanted to take him hostage," the newspaper claimed.

"A military officer ranked as lieutenant general would lead 12 squads including 72 patrol soldiers to capture Somchai, the source said," according to the newspaper.

Mr Somchai has been based in the northern city of Chiang Mai, an electoral stronghold of the government, since shortly after the airport crisis began. He is understood to fear army action against him if he returns to the capital.

It is the latest version of repeated coup rumours that have swirled throughout the crisis. Thai political analysts and members of the government say the protesters' strategy is to create anarchy, forcing the army to step in and topple the government.

The army chief, General Anupong Paochina has repeatedly ruled out what would be Thailand's 19th coup since 1932. But he has also refused to take action against armed protesters hijacking the country's main airport and has twice called for the prime minister to step down.

Protests by the PAD preceded Thailand's last militarty coup, which overthrew the exiled prime minister Thaksin Shinwatra in 2006.

The current protests are motivated by the current government's links to Mr Thaksin, who is loved by the majority of poor voters but loathed by the Bangkok elite and powerful figures in the army and royal palace who appear to have granted the group impunity to destabalise the elected government.

Government supporters have formed a rival protest group called the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) which says it will physically oppose any coup.

There have been several clashes between DAAD and PAD members - possibly prefiguring further worse violence if the situation deteriorates. So far, six people have died in the crisis and many more have suffered severe injuries.

Both groups are bussing supporters into the capital from around the country. On Sunday the DAAD held a peaceful rally in Bangkok and the group is planning another large event on Tuesday.

On Tuesday Thailand's constitutional court is expected to give a ruling dissolving three parties in the coalition government for alleged electoral fraud. Government supporters have said that such a ruling would amount to a "judicial coup". In anticipation of the verdict government supporters and members of parliament have already formed a new "shell" party they will move to.

Government supporters complain that the court has handled the case against them with unusual haste and refused to hear defense witnesses.

Many observers of Thai politics note that the courts, which are seen as close to the government's enemies in the traditional elite, have delivered successive verdicts against the government but soft peddled on numerous cases involving the opposition.

On Friday Thailand's revered King Bhumibol celebrates his 81st birthday and will give his traditional birthday address, which could contain a decisive political message. Thais revere the king as a semi-divine figure who has intervened to end previous national crises.

The anti-government protesters have cast themselves as loyal monarchists acting to protect the king from alleged "republicanism" in the government but he has remained silent throughout the crisis although his wife, Queen Sirikit, has signaled her support for the PAD.

Last year I was in Udon and mainly drank at the bars in Farang Alley, opposite Robinsons. Am I now right in thinking that these bars no longer exist? If so, where are the best places to drink and find some company? I hope to be staying at the Irish Clock (have made an online reservation) and know the bars in that street.
