Russian Navy and Somali pirates

Postby LoongLee » November 11, 2010, 8:54 pm

This video is supposed to show the Russian Navy capturing Somali pirates,,,,,,LL

From the comments:
"This videotape shows Russian Navy commandos on a Somalian pirate ship shortly after the pirates had captured a Russian oil tanker......

The commandos sunk the pirate ship along with the pirates and without any court proceedings, lawyers etc. That is, they used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th and 19th centuries where the captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to do with the pirates. Usually, they were hung....."

Sadly LL it is proving to be an ever more profitable venture... :(
From a couple of days ago...
Somali pirates receive record ransom for ships' release

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-11704306
They are believed to have been paid a record $9.5m (£5.8m) for Samho Dream, a South Korean oil tanker, and nearly $2.8m (£1.7m) for the Golden Blessing, a Singaporean flagged ship.

I fear paying these ridiculous sums of money encourages & finances the next ship being taken.

Call it what you like, but if this was the result every time there would be few who venture into Piracy [-X

Just to be clear, they didn't kill anyone. At 0:14 they request a doctor for the one wounded. At the end they just sink the ship

Personally, I think the Russian action was the correct one, if you not only sink the ship together with its occupants, they have a chance of survival ( not a lot I admit but a chance) and they cannot use the boat again.
The world news should be kept out for at least 3 months and no doubt we will seea remarkable drop in piracy, I men hijacking a ship can be construed as fun if your survival odds are stacked in your favour but if the tables are turned then it is no longer fun but DEADLY serious and only the mad/idiotic people will attempt it.
The downside is that it will raise the stakes, during the 1st and 2nd world wars much ws made of Q ships, a few of those here would also do the trick a the Pirates would not know which was a good one to attack of the opposite.

Nice to see the Russians fixing bayonets, and giving the Somali's a taste of the old cold steel.
