Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani

Things to do and places to see in Udon Thani.

I have been going here for a long time now and in the past it was a good place for fishing but now it has really gone downhill. My wife spoke to the staff who said it has not been re-stocked for a long time now, it was always busy but now not many people seem to grace this venue. The toilets have not been cleaned in a long time(went to use but had to clean seat for self first, full of excrement and 1 not clearing properly).Pity really, as it used to be a very enjoyable place for a day in the open, staff used to be very attentive but now just seem to lay about around the kitchen area all day(maybe because the owners not there or they were not there when i went today),maybe because it is up for sale or maybe some other reason but it is a real shame to see a top class place go downhill so fast,Thank you for any interest shown in my 1st post.

Nin ians

I am very sorry to hear your comments and the issues you raised will be addressed very quickly. The issue about re-stocking does however bother me as the main pond was only re-stocked about 3 weeks ago. This policy has never changed and wont be changed even though the Park is up for sale. We have also agreed with one of our suppliers to take over 1000 new Jeramid next month when they will have reached a decent size. We are going to have to spreadout the fish to accomodate them all. All fish over 4 kilos of which there are hundreds have to be returned to the ponds. We have the water checked on a regular basis by the Government which determines when we can add more fish,as we want our fish healthy and in good condition. The Thai ecomony is quite down right now which has effected the amount of customers visiting the Park but has been improving again lately. As is the case with many establishments unless the owners are present staff tend to get lazy again this has now hopefully been addressed.

Hello Paul, I will be visiting Udon Thani from the 26th of July till the 12th of August and I would like to visit your fishingpark with my 7 year old son. I am rather unfamiliar with Udon Thani, having visited only once for 5 days and not venturing further than the big mall.
What's the best way of getting to the park? I'll be staying at the Centara hotel. I suppose there aren't any taxi's that go there, so is there any public transport that stops close by?

Thank you,
Patrick

Hello Patrick,

Believe it or not UDon now has a taxi Service that you can phone and order taxis, failing that Tuk Tuks are ok as the Park is not far past the old Tesco's on the road to Nong Khai. I am curently in West Africa therefore I dont have the number to hand for the taxis service but will try to find out and PM you. I will be back in Udon around the 2nd of Augt so hopefully will meet you one day in the PArk after that

Any chance of bringing a few of these back from Gambia to increase the diversity in the ponds? :D

Jackspratt,

I would think with a few of these in the ponds we would go from 22 species to 1 within a matter of months or even weeks. :-k

Thanks a lot for the response guys. And thank you for this phone number also. It's great to know there are taxi's available in Udon and I'll definitely make use of them now.
See you in the park maybe.

Cheers and regards,
Patrick

My wife, grandaughter and I have fished there many times and it’s a great day out, best around Udon, food good also. Will be back the 22nd so will see you all about the 24/25th as I presume the wife will need the freezer filled with fish again.

I got back to Udon a few day's ago and today I went to Sabai Sabai Fishing Park today and I have to agree with ''nin ians'', it has gone down hill since I was there last. Never saw anyone catch a decent sized fish and I was there from 10.30am until 6.30pm. Three month ago there was a rule that only one hook was to be used, well this doesn’t appear to apply to the Thai’s as I saw most of them using 2 & 3 hooks at a time and they weren’t stopped, I was angered more about this as the staff were beside them when they were fishing. Furthermore I can’t understand why the staff let people take fish away that are only about 3 to 4 inches in size. I asked one person (not Thai) what he was going to do with these small fish and he told me they were for his cat. There has been a lot of money and effort put into this fishing park but I feel it’s not near as good as it was three month ago. I won’t go on about it but I hope Paul reads this. It's a shame to see it go like this.

Alfronso

Thanks for the comments, I return home this week and P will be returning for the UK so we will set about fixing all the issues raised. The large fish are still there although they are harder to catch than before as they do remember being hooked, thats where it sworth trying different baits. We dont allow the big fish to be taken home. I dont understand people taking homre the small fish either but each to there own. The speed panine breed means we will never run out of these small fish. I too am not happy about the 2 or 3 hooks being used as this just rips the fish apart and thats not good for anyone. I have ordered both Jeramid and Large size Panine, and will be restocking the Panine on Wednesday morning and will find out from my supplier if the Jeramid are ready. Like everywhere else in Thailand while the owners are away the staff do change but they will get a shock next week.

Finally, As everyone knows in Thailand unless you are there all the time its very hard to run a business therefore as I cannot be there all the time I am willing to listen to any reasonable offers from people willing to take over the Park and give the Park the time and dedication it deserves. I cannot help if people don't catch the large fish that are there, I have been fishing for 40+ years and I dont always catch big fish.
