Safe Deposit Boxes

Postby patriot » December 26, 2006, 4:50 pm

Good Morning One and All,
Has anyone any bright ideas with reagrds to renting a safe deposit box in Udon. Needless to say those at all the banks are full.
My father in law was a bit put out when I declined his offer to keep my Chanotes, spare cash and gold under his wardrobe in his house !!
Seriously though, I'd love to hear any suggestions.

Having enquired about safety deposit boxes elsewhere in Thailand, I was lead to believe that their availability was very much linked to how much money you had invested with them and how big a customer you were. Though I have no experience of safety deposit boxes in Udon.. :)

The rule is that you must have an account with a bank to obtain a safe deposit box. They are rather scarce here in LOS.

Every bank will charge a security deposit for the box. Make sure that you keep the receipt for the security deposit. Without that receipt, you will not be able to your security deposit back when you close out the box.

If you are in quick need of a safe deposit box - then go around to the different banks and ask if they have any available. If they do, then open an account and rent the box.

Being able to rent a box does not depend on the size of your deposit.

The above information is based upon my personal experiences. No doubt, someone here will challenge those experiences with their own story which will contradict what I have posted.

Quite so Doc. Firstly, I think they make the rules up as they go along. I doubt there any hard and fast uniform/consistent rules, other than that you have to have an a/c with that bank!!

Secondly, as I said previously, based on my personal experience it did matter how much you have invested with the bank.

When I enquired I already had an a/c, but was told I would have to deposit a large amount for fixed period of time and I vagually recollect there was a significant fee involved too.

I did draw the conclusion that they were in short supply!

If the boxes are in short supply then it is logical to assume that the banks would wish to cater to their largest depositers rather than the small ones. I don't think that could be chalked up to "making up the rules as they go along" as that instead, would simply be a good business decision. Similar situations would be applicable and even acceptable in the States.

Couldn't agree more.
Thanks to those that replied, as I have accounts in both BB and SCB then the best option will be to pester them incessantly until they are sick of my ugly mug and thus provide me with one.
