Santa Fe Resturant

Postby merchant seaman » January 26, 2011, 12:44 pm

Has anyone tried the Santa Fe Resturant at the Tesco Loutus near Carefour? Had the local pepper steak for 109 baht. Very tasty and tender. Portions are not large but well worth the price IMO. They also have imported steaks from N.Z. for about 400 baht. But for 109 baht can't be beat anyway in Udon.

Yes - I had a bad experience there last year, and will never go back. I ordered the ribs, as they looked delicious on the menu. When they arrived they were actually frozen in the middle. Yes frozen solid. I told the waitress and all she could say was 'wave mai?' (as in 'do you want them microwaved?'). I couldn't believe it. Not even an apology. I had them 'waved', ate them, paid and left - couldn't be bothered making a scene.

poor food and service.

I went there immediately after it opened, but have only been back a couple of times since. Not that there is anything wrong with it, far from it, never had a bad meal there. There is just such a huge choice of more than decent Falang places to eat in Udon now & when you add on the multitude of good Thai places, it takes a while to get around them all. :D
I went there because they sold lamb & at the time I think they were the only place in Udon selling it.
Russell at Richmond used to do so & so did Justin at Down Under - both good meals as well - but when they both finished there was only a roast at The Clock - whereas I prefer a chop (or 2).
I thought the meal was very tasty, as you say though, nothing like the largest portion in town. They had 'deals' then - offering low priced specials & they certainly did represent good value for money. I think the lamb was about the 299 baht mark at the time.
For the size & style of meal they sort of reminded me of the places in the UK that cater for business lunches, tasty but not likely to require a nap after eating.. :D

I went their soon after it opened.......not impressed. The so called meat was mostly fat and as Nick said the meal was microwaved as seems to be a few places doing that. Went again a few months later but no better. Sizzler do a good meal and it's fresh, salad bar very good, but way too expensive.

in most off all falang food restaurants in udon, it is all nuked food ( microwaved ) , not really fresh but straight from the freezer, and if not, warmed up in microwave , what makes it loose taste a lot , so next time you want to eat real food , go look in the kitchen first , how many MW they have stacked on top of each other , so you will know what you will be getting and paying ( expensive) for , but maybe you like it and do not mind , it is all up to individual taste ....
so enjoy your meals , nuked or not.......

Its not bad....me and the wife have eaten there several times when we have combined a trip to Tang Ngee Soon with this Tesco, near the airport.
By coincidence we were there yesterday.....I had fish steak with french fries, garlic bread and salad.....portion was small but what do you expect for 59 baht ?
My wife had a combined pork and chicken steak with french fries and salad plus a free bowl of soup and a drink....all inclusive for 179 baht which is pretty good value.
I agree portions tend to be on the small side and cater mainly for lunchtime clientele wanting to "fill a hole" so to speak.
I think that they have got a new chef in the last couple of months as the food does seem to be of better quality.
