Sausage, or Rice/Fat in a Casing?

Postby Green Grasser » November 16, 2009, 2:35 pm

I like to walk around the night market and view Thai life.

One thing of interest is to see what the sidewalk food carts are selling and their price.

However, I hardly ever buy any sidewalk food to eat, because I wonder about refrigeration, cleanliness, flies, etc.

One sidewalk cart, closest or next to closest to Nutty Park, has a lady cook who sells all kinds of stuff on a stick. I think I recognized fish balls and other kinds of balls. I think that the balls are made commercially, because I have seen them in the frozen food section of grocery stores. I often wonder what are in those balls. I tasted a few and they have an odd rubbery texture that is unlike any fish I ever tasted.

That same sidewalk cart sells hot dogs on a stick. Supposedly, commercial hot dogs are pre-cooked and only need to be warmed up. But, I always overcook them in order to be safe.

I noticed that this sidewalk cart sold something that looked like a thick sausage. I asked the price. She indicated 10 baht. So, I thought about it and figured it was commercially made, since she had about 20 of them already cooked and they were uniform in appearance.

I picked out two of those sausages that looked well-cooked and requested she grilled them more.

After they were cooked five minutes, she placed them in a plastic bag for me.

Later that night in my hotel room, I bit on one sausage and chewed. It did not taste like meat. I looked at the inside of the sausage. It was all white. I am guessing it was white boiled rice and/or white fat. I bit on the other sausage and inspected it, with the same result. I swallowed both bites and they did not fill my stomach like a real sausage would. To be on the safe side, I threw them away.

I did not get sick afterwards (at least for the past 15 hours), so they were ok to eat.

What were those sausages? Were they a special Thai version of a quasi-sausage?

Thanks in advance.

I can't tell you what's in them but I think they're damn tasty. There are two versions, one made with rice and the other with I think glass noodle (or some type of noodle). Anyway, I think pretty safe to eat as they grill them a second time and any nasty's present are sure to be killed off. I have them frequently, always hot and never experienced any ill side effects.

the thai guy who owns the mobile stalls that sells the sausages with the glass noodles lives in our village and has 11 carts , each cart sells between 100 to 250 per day depending on where they go .
they are made fresh everyday each seller only takes enough that they know they can sell in a day .
imho i would eat 1 of the noodle sausages before i,d eat a Mc donalds ever time ..... =P~

  you won't find much or any meat in them, i've had the rice version, basically meat flavored rice in sausage sleeve........i don't care for them, or it was such a mental let down, i haven't gotten over them. Ree gets them occasionally and they do smell good, but my brain is thinking bratwurst, and taste bud are depressed and confused. 8)

You sorta have to shop around to find the sausages that are best for your taste. Not all street sausages are the same, or even close. After much trial and error I've narrowed my choice down to a couple of market areas (Baan Hoy and Nong Sam Rong) that have them with a reasonable amount of pork mixed in with the rice. I like 'em! And La is right, don't be expecting a nice juicy polish or brat. However, the really good ones are great (IMO) and I have no problem eating and enjoying them. Don't let one experience put you off Green Grasser, experiment a little (over time) and enjoy the street food.

Some people here are used to bland, tasteless sausages, boiled in non-descript murky gruel. I think they call it "proper."

I suppose a sausage casing filled with just about anything is a step up from that.

If you want to try a really good Thai sausage, the creme de la creme, IMO, of Thai sausages... Try a Northern-style sausage =P~ .
Available at the Norther-style food restaurant on Srisuk Rd., map ref: G-10.
Restaurant located across the street from a shop that sells bathroom fixtures, they have a big sign saying American Standard.

Ansell make the casings Mortiboy, they are available at most 7-11's.

generally they are slightly chewy , so i prefer to buy the local products already made,

Ban Phen 70 km south of Khon Kaen is a must to stop off and buy , 24/7

In my rural Isaan village some people are very good in making Sai Grok (Sai Gok), a nicely attempted copy of bratwurst although nothing compares to a real German bratwurst!

These Sai Grok are made on a string, dried in the sun after been prepared. They contain pork or beef and are very tasty, they fill your stomach like bratwursts do. Price 5 baht, I always buy 25 for 100 baht and put them in the freezer.
Easily made warm, put curry powder and Heinz tomato ketchup on it and tastes like curry wurst, put sateh sauce on it and it tasts like Sateh babi =P~ =P~

I also have a recipe to make them yourselves, if interested I can post it.

Cheers
Joe
