Re: Myanmar coup

You must have mis-read the post by Tamada in which he mentioned that there are no regimes comparable to Burma: 'The position of Myanmar's military in society is unique. I can't see any similarities with any country in southeast Asia.' There is one similar to Myanmar. It is Indonesia. Do some researc...

Re: Myanmar coup

The position of Myanmar's military in society is unique. I can't see any similarities with any country in southeast Asia. They are very good at manipulating the tension between the minorities and the ethnic Burmans. About 30-35% of Myanmar's population is non-Burman. You can find this type of tensi...

Re: Myanmar coup

^ How do generations of Burmese army generals manage to keep generations of soldiers onside? Are they guaranteed a decent income or basic food or something? Free accommodation maybe? When I was working there, I asked my driver about the stately, neo-colonial houses on the north side of Yangon, towa...

Re: Myanmar coup

These guys must have thought that Trump was sent from god. The so called beacon of democracy became a beacon of 'whatever it takes' politics. Burma can thumb it's nose at democracy citing the Americans trashing democratic norms. Would they have executed this coup anyway. Probably so, would they hav...

Re: Myanmar coup

This is from the Myanmar Times: 'BREAKING: Police forces and soldiers killed a protester in Mandalay on Saturday, February 20, following their use of live ammunition on demonstrators rallying against the military-led government. Several others were injured during the clash. UPDATE: Another protester...

Re: Inter Province travel

I liked Thatcher and her ability to counter the Councils and loony left. I did not like the way she surrendered all of Hong Kong to China, but without U.S. support, she did not have much choice. I liked the way she dealt with Argentina, and the miners. She also gave many people in Britain the opport...

Re: Witch Hunt part deux... The Second Impeachment

Unless 17 republicans in the Senate switch their votes, this impeachment is dead in the water. But, it's great for CNN to give on-the-spot coverage.

Re: Myanmar coup

Khun Paul, the Tatmadaw has done this a number of times before. It happens over and over again. The world forgets...the country is no longer a pariah state, and foreign investment flows again.

Re: Myanmar coup

This is from a Burmese Facebook poster: 'February 7 at 2:31 PM · An alarming news have emerged that staffs from Union Election Commission (UEC) in Naypyidaw of Myanmar are being held at gunpoint by a group of soldiers from Myanmar Military. The UEC staffs are being forced to make a signed statement ...

Re: Myanmar coup

Yes, don't mess with the Tatmadaw, they don't fool around. Back in August 1988 longtime Dictator Ne Win warned rebellious monks and students that when the Tatmadaw shoots, they shoot to kill. They even shot into hospitals killing nurses and doctors who were looking after wounded protesters.

Re: Myanmar coup

Attentive locals watched this army chief Min Aung Hlaing moaning about the election from the get go. He even belly ached about it in early January to the visiting Chinese Foreign Minister. Apparently, by staging this coup, he is "protecting his assets" so I imagine that either a chunk of his ill-go...

Re: Myanmar coup

Apparently in the last election the government of Aung San Suu Kyi won 83% of votes which would then allow them to change the so called Constitution made by the Military in 2008. That Constitution of 2008 gave the Military 25% of seats in the Parliament so the 75% of votes by a Party to change it c...

Re: Myanmar coup

It seems the Tatmadaw, just like Trump, thinks the election was a fraud and they actually won and were not humiliated. Their coup, however, seems to be successful.
