Re: Miscellaneous COVID-19/Corona Virus Discussion, Questions, etc.

Having worked on the intel and psyops side of the military for 26 years, it's frightening to me that some people who consider themselves patriotic Americans put their faith in the news eminating from Russia. Often, they will belittle reports coming from respected economic, medical, science professio...

Re: Look At How Ridiculously Wrong All The COVID-19 Models Were

Not to mention different diets, different customs like handshakes/wais, rural versus city, etc etc. So if only 99,999 people die in the US versus the 100,000-200,000 as predicted by the WH, Trump will take credit for holding down the impact. Any way you look at it, though, that's 99,999 people that ...

3 days left to file 2019 FBAR for American citizens! Parrot, sorry to steal your thunder....! 555 No problem......it was supposed to rain here the past few days, but the weather forecasts in Texas aren't any better than they are in Thailand. I noticed an apparent 6 month extension for the FBAR........

Re: ATM now requires Thai ID card for some transactions?

I don't see anything in Thai websites that report that. I know many folks are receiving 'food stamp' payments onto their ID cards or other cards issued by the government. I wonder if that may be what's behind the ATM machine addition. If I come across anything in the news, I'll report here.

Tam, yes, I meant Home Depot. Added Benny for me at Home Depot and Lowe's is I get 10%military discount. I've seen a few larger chainsaws in Thailand, but never in the stores. One man told me he modified a small chainsaw with a long bar. I'll have to do more checking when we return. My desktop in Ud...

Re: Reporting from Across the Pacific

Although we feel comfy where we're at in Texas, I'm thankful our daughter doesn't live in NY or NJ! Most everyone here seems to be good with masks and keeping safe distance from others. Like Tom Hanks marooned on the island, all we can do is ride out the storm and wait to be rescued. I read today on...

Re: Masks

It's sort of akin to wearing a t-shirt in public. To the best of knowledge, there's no law that says you must wear one. But if the general Thai public wears one when out and about, then so should expats. Memories of seeing a beer bellied forei9 in the old Complex sans t-shirt. Because I live in the ...

Along the lines of my post above, today's article about 8 UK doctors is interesting.

The early numbers don't look positive. I'm not sure of the % of ICU Covid patients on ventilators, but judging by hospital admission standards for the virus, I'd guess many are. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/04/02/826105278/ventilators-are-no-panacea-for-critically-ill-covid-19-pati...

Re: Worse than Corona Virus

Sounds to me like healthy people have an unhealthy view of things. Wait until you or a family member have the virus and can't find a hospital bed. I haven't heard a single respected economist take the view of the economy taking priority over slowing/stopping the spread of the virus. Maybe I need to ...

I'd be surprised if that was affecting Thailand. I'm in the middle of Texas, and although she doesn't have fiber to her house, there's been no noticeable slowdown in speeds during the day or night.

Re: The source of the coronvirus??

It's easy to knock China out of the equation, but then, as Canada found out this week, we'd have to take the US out of the equation, as well, for things like N95 masks. It's nice to think any one country can supply the high tech gear we need to fight wars, pandemics, gas our engines or heat our home...

Re: Reporting from Across the Pacific

I count myself as fortunate to be 70 and still able to cut grass, unload a few tons of mulch/compost, or hack down a few large branches with a chainsaw for our daughter. I asked our daughter why I didn't see other 70 year olds walking their daughter's 100 pound german shepherd for a daily 2 mile wal...

Re: Gardening & Landscaping

If your spouse is Thai, it'd be handy to know the good juju trees from the bad. Way back in 1997-1999, the Bangkok Post had an article about fengshui and trees. When we built our house in 1998, our neighbor gave us a jackfruit tree and told us to plant it near the house. About 10 years after we plan...

A week or so after we arrived in Texas, I saw an Asian lady wearing winter gloves and a mask while shopping.....a stark contrast to the scene in Suvarnaphumi when we left with 90+% of people wearing masks. A week or so ago, the numbers of people with masks started creeping up. Today at the Vietnames...

Back in Septemberish 2008, my 5 brothers were visiting while we were vacationing in Texas. We were 'on vacation' and enjoying ourselves........as the economy began to crumble. The market tanked, financial and insurance companies began to tank and there was incessant talk of doom and gloom....to the ...
