Setting up an Internet Connection

Postby Alice » October 2, 2010, 7:45 pm

Hi All,

I will be in Sawaang Daen Din visiting the in-laws in November / December 2010, and am planning to set up an internet connection at the house. I'm told that landlines are impossible to get, and that satellite is the way to go. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that satellite is an expensive monthly outlay (2,000 +) for a not especially quick connection.
This thread is worth reading to give you a cheaper alternative, although still not lightening quick.

Sad fact of life is that fast internet connection is only available via ASDL anywhere in the world. The lack of a telephone line is only the first issue in Thailand, followed by distance from switchboard & the availability of fiber optic lines...

I agree with Bob.Looked into satellite awhile ago and it was expensive, plus the reports i read suggested it was pretty slow for the money. If you can't get a landline or 3G Mobile broadband then i think the best you will get is using a mobile phone with EDGE,unless anyone knows different of course.

As far as I know there are 3 DSL service providers: CAT, TOT and 3BB. CAT and TOT are provide their service over a land line (telephone), whereas 3BB use there own dictated data line. You need to contact them to see if they service your area.

More info here:

True Corp., I believe is satellite, not sure:

If I were just visiting the in laws I would just forget about internet (unless it's imperative for business)
Had satellite (slow and dependent on weather conditions) also very expensive.
I'm with TOT had to wait 3 months for phone line and then 1 month for internet connection (has to be in wife's name)
Dongles slow and not reliable.
Maybe if you do need to use find a local internet shop if there is one.
good luck

Setting up an Internet Connection

Postby 430xc » June 17, 2011, 1:20 am

If I understand you correctly, it takes significant time to get internet set up in Udon. I am considering paying for several months of internet for a lady. She lives in Kut Chap. Any advice on which provider and cost.
Right now, she is using the internet at work and I am concerned she will get in trouble. Also, the time available is bad. 17:00 for her is 3:00 for me in the US. I need some sleep.

Not so "..."430xc"... setting up an internet connection normally takes only 2 or 3 days in Udon... (High speed) internet is not available out in the sticks just yet...I asked 3BB about the availability of cable internet in Kud-Jab just the other week and I was informed maybe by the back end of this year... so I believe your options will be limited to slow speed.

Setting up an Internet Connection

Postby coxo » June 17, 2011, 10:31 am

My place in Udon is located where there are no phone lines, I had to go for one of those little sim card plug in the port modems, painfully slow, 50 hrs per month cost about 230b, at the end of the day at least you have the internet, cannot use skype though, avoid the hours of 4pm to 7.30pm then speeds up a little.

I have a not expensive Nokia mobile(E72) and i use it to call on skype or chatting in msn or yahoo messenger. I also read all the newspaper and watch youtube. I pay with dtac 200 baht per month for 70 hrs. extra time is 1/2 a baht I can use it everywhere and i can assure you is faster than my home comp. I have a prepaid normal sim.

Setting up an Internet Connection

Postby FrazeeDK » June 17, 2011, 7:42 pm

recently installed 3BB DSL. I would recommend stopping by the 3BB shop (there are a number of them in the various malls; I used the one at Big C). The sales rep quickly pulled up Google Earth, pinpointed my house location and was able to show me the nearest installed DSL junction box (about 300+ meters from my house). She was able to use Google Earth to measure the approximate distance to my house and give me a quick quote for installation of 3BB DSL cable and an approximate time for installation.

The install team showed up the next day; one guy installed the in-house wiring and DSL Modem. 3 guys strung the DSL cable. Installation price total approx 3,000 Baht which included buying the DSL Modem, paying for DSL cable and installtion. End result. 6MB down, 512kbps up 24/7 (I've tested it numerous times).. Montly cost 695 Baht (Ipaid six months up front)

Setting up an Internet Connection

I thought that 3bb were doing a promotion where you would only have to pay about 650 Baht for a 1 port wireless router and everything else was free

the 6 Mb package should be about 630 Baht a month including tax

this was translated by google translate

If I understand you correctly, you just use your smart phone to access internet from wherever you are. You can use skype or MSN messenger.

What I am looking to do is get a way for my Thai g/f to use Messenger or Skype with me in the USA. She lives in Kutchap. From other posts, it sounds like it is a hassle and expensive for very limited cable/DSL service in Kutchap. Can you use your phone as a WIFI hotspot and connect to your PC?

Sounds like this would eliminate the need for an internet cable etc to her home. Also she can use this phone and stop her other service.

I am not a computer wizard, so please explain things in a basic way.

Thanks
