Sex movie worm spreads worldwide

A booby-trapped e-mail that promises free sex movies is racking up victims around the world, warn security firms.

Some variants of the Windows worm contain a link to PDF that a recipient has been told to expect.

Those clicking on the link get neither movies nor documents but give the malware access to their entire Outlook address book.

When installed, the worm sends copies of itself to every e-mail address it can find.

The malicious e-mail messages have a subject line saying "Here you have" and contain a weblink that looks like it connects to a PDF document. Instead it actually links to a website hosting the malware.

Once it is installed, the worm tries to delete security software so it remains undetected.

As well as spreading via e-mail, the worm also tries to find victims by looking for open net links from infected PCs and exploiting the Windows Autorun feature on USB drives and other attached media.

Although not widespread, reports suggest that some corporations were hit hard by it. Nasa, AIG, Disney, Procter & Gamble and Wells Fargo were all reported as struggling to contain an outbreak of the worm.

At these firms, e-mail inboxes were flooded with hundreds of copies of the e-mail messages bearing the malicious link.

Efforts to contain the virus were aided late on 9 September when the website hosting the worm was shut down. However, security firms expect new variants of the worm to turn up.

Security firm Kaspersky said the worm had some similarities to viruses such as the ILoveYou bug by exploiting Outlook address books.

"The difference with those earlier attacks is that the e-mails typically carried the malicious file itself and didn't rely on a link to a downloading site," wrote Dennis Fisher in an analysis on the Kaspersky Threat Post blog.

"But the technique used to entice users to click on the attachment or malicious link is the same: offer the user something he wants to see," he wrote.

thanks for the warning.....but anyone who would click on a link in an email offering free sex movies almost deserves to have their hard drive sucked clean.

Sorry, arjay, everything I read about the worm says:
"The e-mails provide a link to a website purporting to offer shared PDF documents or movie files but which actually execute the virus when clicked upon."

I'm not aware of any worms/viruses that infiltrate an inbox without some action by the receiver.....such as 'click on this link' or 'click to open pdf' or 'click to view this picture' etc.

For what it's worth, I've been using gmail for a few years now. Gmail automatically isolates spam into a separate mailbox. It's 99+% effective. I might actually see a spam in my inbox once every few months. It beats the old days of filtering through a bin of trash everyday trying to find emails from friends and family.

Hi,
Parrot, You do not have to go to a sex site to get this worm or whatever it is. or click onto it. I was never on a sex site and got it. Unless you call U.M. a sex sight. It even bypassed my Norton 360. Luckily i was able to fix it by using Norton go back and went back to a few days before I caught it. Lost a little info. but it has never appeared in the last 2 weeks, touch wood. It is what I call a hell of a virus. And I never opened a spam site etc. It was contained in a e-mail i got from a good friend when I checked. He did not know it till later.
I have never been on websites which you state. and I have never clicked to open PDF and all what you say. There are new viruses which are completely different to a few weeks ago, take care and get a good anti-virus. you might still get it, as I did, BUT, you can then get rid of it. Spam is also different, and you do not need to open spam to get this virus, You get a e-mail, like me, affected by it, so beware. It is what I call a Bas***d. You do not have to open anything else to get it. I found that it reads your contact list and sends the V this way, to them, and you have the domino effect. First thing I did was delete my contact list, Have all the info. on a merory stick. As everyone should.

douglas,
just for clarity sake, when you received the email from your friend, did you click on anything within that email (usually in blue, usually underlined)?

For what it's worth, "U.M. being a sex site" usually only when OT is posting
