Skydiving in Udon Thani

Postby lee » April 12, 2007, 11:26 am

If anyone's interested in extreme sports, you may like to checkout the Skydiving club on the Udon-Sakon Nakhon Rd approx 50 km's from Udon Thani. This is the business card they gave me.

Lots of ex-pats in Pattaya have already taken up the sport.
They practice from condo balconies.

I last had a jump (no pun intended!) thirty years ago, and can still remember the adrenaline rush. :D Perhaps it's time to do it again. Any other oldies like to give it a try?

Open door is not a good reason?

Remember that many skydiving clubs are quite poor and planes not so perfect.

I have do this even in February here in Finland, when it was -17 centigrades celcius on ground level. 8)

Thailand gives much more pleasant experiece.

Skydiving in Vientiane for SongKran

Postby FrazeeDK » April 13, 2007, 10:36 am

coincidentally...

tomorrow, Saturday 14 April, as part of SongKran Bpee Mai celebrations in Vientiane, the Don Chan Palace Hotel will have skydiving competition on the shores of the Mekong.. Additionally, those that want to do tandem jumping (as in the ad above) with a qualified instructor can pay to be taken up in a huge MI-17 helicopter to jump...

In 1971 or so a group formed Vientiane's first skydiving club. Their first jump was in front on the Land Xang Hotel along the Mekong. At that time during the dry season, the Mekong was dry sand dunes for a several hundred meters; the water was very narrow, fast moving and extremely dangerous The divers came down to the landing zone as planned but discovered a group of children waiting to catch them. Luckily no one was hurt.

Next week they attempted another jump. Although this jump was not announced seemingly half the city showed up to witness the event. I was asked to help keep the landing zone clear. Two jumpers left the plane just as a storm kicked up. They were blown off course and disappeared behind the sand dunes and hopefully on the Thai side of the river. When the parachutists landed there was a terrific cloud burst and all the spectators ran for shelter. I noticed the plane suddenly cut back on its engine and started circling downward in a emergency dive over the jumpers. Something had gone wrong. I ran to where the parachutists came down and found a fisherman who had witnessed the tragedy. The parachutists, American couple, landed in the narrow river. The wife was tangled in the lines and the husband swam over to help. Both were sucked under by the swift current. Their bodies were found 3 days later.

Hmmm, I heard about that mishap but thought it was earlier on, pre-1970, no?

Late spring 1973 an Ozzie friend and I started a jump club in Vientiane, great fun up until the Israelies and those other folks started throwing darts at each other early fall, price of fuel went way up and we could no longer get a free RLAF H-34 for the jumps. As a club, we made well over a 100 jumps that summer with no problems.

I ended up with about 100 fun jumps over the years there.
