I've only seen one snake in the wild whilst living in Thailand, (admittedly not quite a year yet), and I've spent a few months living in a very rural village, the only snake I saw was crossing the road whilst I was driving. Never even seen one on my TGF's parents vast farm they have, so your lady maybe half correct, in that they have nearly all been eaten to extinction. The Thais don't seem all that conservation concious to me so it wouldn't surprise me, there is big cull on Tookays at the moment as they can sell them to medicine companies, they'll all be but extinct in a few years too...shame really!!!

well not to make you worry but as advice, as thailand has many snakes , and you will be staying in rural area , you will get snake visitors, you say you are building home 30min from bandung, what direction?, you most know bandung is known as cobra - area....., but anyway if you get a snake in your garden try not to kill it because it took a wrong turn and ended up there..., most snakes you can easy chase with a very long stick, or they are gone all ready when you approach them....
most times of the years you get snakes is after rain season, when everything start getting dry and the snake start looking for water, anyway i hereby include a picture of a snake i caught last week in our garden, it is a flying tree snake , harmless, i released in the field next to some trees....

but let us hope you don't get them....

We live in a rural village and I see a least 1 snake a week around our land. Not such big things but a snake is a snake. In the last 7 years of living here I think I've seen about a dozen larger 2 metre or so snakes within our perimeter or in the local area.
Rule of thumb for me is leave them alone and they'll do the same, but if they get too close to the house I'll get them relocated....

We live outside the city, surrounded by jungle. I'd guess a week doesn't go by that our dogs don't spot a snake......some small, some as fat as the meaty part of a baseball bat and 2+ meters long. A number of years ago a friend along the ring road found a python (or similar) in the drainage ditch alongside his home.....a monster.....the neighbors hauled it off to the temple where it was on display for a week or so then released.
Our dogs got the snake in the photo....we gave it to some neighbors who promptly sliced and diced it up into paht grapao.

Many snakes around in rural Isan, don't let anyone fool you.

I live about 50 km from Ban dung so you won't see the snakes on my farm, otherwise you would relocate yourself

Had many snakes on my farm, around the house too, Spitting Cobras, Kraits, Pit Vipers, Russel's Viper. These are the venomous ones I encountered. The majority though is harmless, like have been posted by Kopkei (Golden Tree snake)and Parrot (Kukri snake). Rat snakes, Keelbacks, Bronzebacks, Laotian wolfsnakes, they are all abundantly present here.

Advise to the OP: change your fear into knowledge, with help of the thread "venomous snakes of Udon thani" from Michael C. you can learn to recognize snakes, like has been said most snakes flee, some will attack if threatened f.i. by a dog, or when you step on their tail which I did, got bitten and nearly died. I learned to determine what snake it is and in most cases the harmless snake will disappear. Those venomous snakes that come too close to the house will be killed, like I had to do the first year when 7 Spitting Cobras came to the idea to stroll around the (newly built) house.
If your house will be built in rough terrain some snakes will have to move and might come back later...

Live with it, this is Thailand so a country full of snakes...

Good luck

You're absolutely right, another avoidable extinction by the human race!

At least the Tokay that lives in my living room will die of old age...

Even in Udon town you will see snakes sometimes. but, as a general rule, 90% of snakes are harmless and as joe said, snakes will run away given the chance. Just make sure your house is pretty snake proof, and if walking in long grass or bush, consider better footware and even jeans. The only person i know personally who was bitten by a snake was wearing flip flops and walking through grass at night - a little sense will reduce the risk a lot.

That's a good one Docta, snake comes in through the "MS WINDOWS"

I guess this is a Sunbeam snake and as it has many colours like the wiring in the computer it might have thought to find a cute female snake inside 8) (snakes can't see well)

Anyway, it proves snakes are everywhere in Thailand, a good advice to keep your house snake proof, I can add that I never found one snake inside the house.

so according to the former pictures , the first lesson would be, as you still are building ,look they fix everything vermin , snakes or whatever can not come in the home ( keep the doors closed...) , as i get also snakes, mouse ,kopkei,etc...
but always outside , never inside ......, luckily...... ( i put mouse traps ,and i am catching them on regular base, as in rain season mouse enjoy staying inside...)

Snakes around the house keep mice and rats away, funny enough I have plenty of frogs (tree frogs), toads and lizards around the house, guess they are not on the snake's menu... :-k

More seriously, my house is built higher than the land, a three-step stairs leads to the terrace with the sliding doors (no snakes under the doors) and the back door has also 3 steps before you can get in.
Now snakes have no problem climbing stairs just my logic is: why would they? Plenty of food for them outside the house, on top my two dogs are a nightmare for snakes so that way it keeps the house snake free.
