True very true Parrot ,,,,, but watching Catfish ,,seems to point to FB as being the main method of these fruitcakes and Walter Mittys .. causing misery .

You go to a pub and meet and talk to people. Between the lines you say you have a shop at nongsim and perhaps you get new customers. It can ruin your life when you start an affair with one of the gorgous staff of that pub or a weirdo start to punch you in the face. You have good and bad stories online and in d real world.

Yes, but in a pub you see the real person, face to face & have an opportunity to weigh up what you think about them before you even speak to them. Plus, if you cannot spot 'the nutter' in a pub then you are a pretty poor judge of character & possibly deserve the assault. If you decide to have an affair with one of the staff then that is a decision shrouded in actuality &, possibly, alcohol but still a decision based on facts not some fictitious half world where more lies are told than truths..

My point was, is that pub only a pub for weirdo's? It can be a good pub. Facebook have weirdo's members but it is not only for weirdo's. Many presidents, prime ministers, other VIP's, CEO's have a Facebook page...some of them are weirdo's indeed ...hehehe ...joking....

More lies are told then truths on FB ...... becos the mittys can get away with their spin so much easier . In the real world you are dealing with real issues face to face and deal with the accident accordingly ,,, on these SMS like FB is just BS .. imo .

Were all different and have different views ,,, for me FB is just not and never will be part of my life ... free to choose which ever way you wanna go.

& my point is that it is VERY easy to spot the weird & wonderful in real life.
On Facebook it is impossible until it is too late..
Sorry just too many weirdo's to make the risk worth while...
You carry on chatting on there & I will continue to ignore it like the plague.
It needs a major overhaul before it becomes a medium worth bothering with & I am not sure that it would be even then..

Keyboard weirdo or warrior online is a fact. I am talking here about using social media for business purposes. If you use it well it can be an advantage for your business.

It can also be use for SEO purposes.
Social Media channels are "inbound" channels. Website is the hub. The website is where you want your customers, audience, etc to come. Social media provides the means to get there and also for example raise awareness....with weirdo's or not weirdo's as members.

Ok Bob,imagine your weirdo's is 50% of members of only Facebook SM platform. In theory you can reach the other 50% = 500.000 million people. 0,5% only = 2.5 million members. And don't forget, a weirdo on internet likes perhaps also a Cornish Pasty.

You would be, sorry to say, stupid if you won't try one or more SM platforms. Many companies, like the examples in one of my previous post here, use it.

Its good that in a forum we can have different opinions.

Hope you don't mind that the last 2 posts are mine. Here is the 3rd one cause I just read the pro and con reactions on an interesting article about college experience and Facebook with title "Is Facebook destroying the American college experience?

One of the reactions suits the discussion of my pub example above and about the Catfish MTV:

Okay first of all Facebook is not the enemy. You as a person, as an adult you are the one in charge of controlling the way you use the internet, the way you use social media. When you first become acquainted with Facebook its wow so much to see, so many people to add. pictures and videos and what not. but after a while it just becomes a regular website. In College you know, maybe you met this nice person in your Biology class. It would be normal to get on the site and maybe add the person. simple. I do not understand how people are always making a big deal about Facebook. it does NOT "destroy college experience" you know what destroys college experience? drugs and alcohol (for example). Facebook doesn't just appear on your screen. YOU are the one typing in the website. YOU are the one entering username and password! The world is changing people keep up!!

And Jack, you started this topic and if there are interesting articles to read about this topic suddenly you want to stop

Don't talk crap George. My comment was about social media, or more precisely, the proliferation thereof - not stopping discussion about it.

Facebook users are unwittingly revealing intimate secrets – including their sexual orientation, drug use and political beliefs – using only public "like" updates, according to a study of online privacy.

The research into 58,000 Facebook users in the US found that sensitive personal characteristics about people can be accurately inferred from information in the public domain.

Researchers were able to accurately infer a Facebook user's race, IQ, sexuality, substance use, personality or political views using only a record of the subjects and items they had "liked" on Facebook – even if users had chosen not to reveal that information.

The study will reopen the debate about privacy in the digital age and raise fresh concerns about what information people share online.

Michal Kosinski, one of the academics behind the study, said he believed Facebook users would be "spooked" by the findings and called for regulatory intervention by politicians..............................

This article is ****** ridiculous... For goodness sake, claiming that someone 'liking' The Lord of the Rings is evidence of a high IQ? You have got to be kidding...

As for all this nonsense about sudden revelations of sexual orientation due to, of all things, a 'like' of gay 'n' lesbian TV n' movies... how extraordinary to discover that correlation...

I knew it could theoretically be done, humans are fairly predictable creatures after all,
but not to degree of accuracy demonstrated in this study, an this is only what an academic did,
an organisation he size of Google who have thousands of people working on similar algorithms,
with far larger data sets and with greater experience and knowledge of interpreting that data
and the algorithms would achieve a far higher rate of accuracy, if they haven't done so.

There are indeed morons who perhaps are getting "high" by hacking Facebook pages of well known people. He or she perhaps does not realize the consequences of being caught.

Even Colin Powell isn’t safe from hackers.

The former secretary of state saw his Facebook page overtaken by a hacker who posted anti-Bush comments, and focused some negative energy Powell's way, too.

The Washington Post picked up and posted some of the comments before they were deleted, including: “YOU WILL BURN IN HELL,BUSH” and “KILL THE ILLUMINATI!”

The hacker seemed intent on battling Powell for his page, posting, “PUT A CURSE ON THE FINGER WHICH YOU USE TO DELETE THESE POSTS!!!”

Powell was apparently able to gain the upper hand, posting later in the day, “I'm happy to report that the hacking problem
has been fixed. We have been working with fb this morning and they took immediate action to remedy the situation.”
