...and this proves my point about the EVILS of social media. Can I get a witness? How about an "Amen!"?

If we were all sitting around chatting it up, say at The Bookstore Cafe over a free meal and drinks courtesy of Jeremy (who I know to be a really nice, polite, and likable guy), there would not be all this flaming going on. We'd still be talking about Facebook and not each other.

The human, personal side gets lost and things go awry. We are all reduced to bits and bites stored forever in The Twilight Zone. Days, months, or years from now, people may read Librarian's posts, replies to him, and perhaps decide not to dine at his restaurant based on that (which would be a mistake because the food and the little extras they do are unparalleled in Udon and he really is a nice guy who should probably be logging in with some other alias when expressing himself). Now do detractors see my point?

...and here we have someone else making my point again about how sinister Facebook et al really are. A demented stranger (ha! kidding!) or thousands like him, if interested, has the means to stalk and terrorize anyone from afar with little effort. The more information he has, the more emboldened he may become (heh, I got something FOR ya ). Facebook, gives people a false sense of security that they can protect themselves by clicking a few settings. Newflash: ALL of that "privacy protection" can be defeated rather easily by someone so inclined. So, with all the information typically provided by Facebook users, that looney may just try his luck whereas in the past the relative anonymity of not even being on his radar was plenty security against remote loonies. As Parrot effectively demonstrates here, that is not the case anymore.

My case stands at rest.

I know people who shred every bill, atm slip, anything with their name on it. I've also seen people post their phone numbers on the forum, directions to their homes, and (not you KD, but you can tell if you wish) how much gold they're stashing at home. A few have been brave enough to state that they have a safe bolted to their closet floor.

I think all this facebook/social media stuff is a lot like sex (okay, maybe when we were younger). You can have enjoy it as often as you like if you use some common sense. You knock up the sweetheart next to you in high school, you didn't use common sense. A teacher having sex with his/her student.......bad move. You pull a David Carradine or a Dominique Strauss-Kahn, you didn't use common sense. No pun intended with that ref to Grasshopper.

G'Day Jon, I can understand your reluctance to stay away from social media sites such as Facebook & Twitter just look what the latter has done to some footballers. Also why share some of your more private thoughts with the rest of the world. I, for one get tired of the numerous e-mails asking me if I would like to join people on Facebook or some similar site. This is one site whereby we can share banter and if necessary we can always go one on one with e-mails. Chin Chin Jon your posts are the ones I look forward to most! Keep them coming & Up The Irons!Steamed variety?

Speaking of Facebook... coincidentally, I just watched a very bizarre, indie psycho-FaceBook-related movie last night, called Catfish, which you can search for if you want.

A woman assuming multiple identities is tracked down by some NYC lads making the flik and exposed; surreal and disconcerting.

Very relevant discussion on this new and unusual (& unprecedented) medium, social and/or anti-social media.

Yup. My wife is monitoring this sort of thing about a young lady on Facebook who is allegedly local bargirl. It's all in Thai, but the gist is the same. Another lady is lovie-dovie with her American boyfriend in English on his page while simultaneously joking about fleecing him in Thai language on her page...

I spend a grand total of about 5-10 minutes per day checking headlines on Bangkok Post, Phuket Gazette, and Udonmap (to see if one or two threads are of interest), as well as Facebook.

To be sure, there are some serial posters among my facebook "friends" who post several times per day, change their profile photo literally every day, etc. these are nothing but annoyances to me, though am glad to see postings of nieces and nephews and close friends an ocean away.

Noted in train wreck thread that Parrot said he has no time for Facebook. Though dear Parrot you seem to have plenty of time, based on your Udonmap posts that now total 1908. Just teasing......and expecting your call later.

Jello , that was well put IMO,

i,ve been reading this thread to see why and what, some people are taking the stance that facebook is dangerous, evil or other reasons

i,m interested to read about something i am not aware of, as to why some people take this stance with a view perhaps of changing the way i use social media sites.

i find some of the replies *contradictory* (is a better word to use than hypocritical)

maybe if you point out to someone that their viewpoint contradicts what they have earlier said or done, then that person may offer an amended viewpoint , or they may make personal attacks to mask the embarrassment of being found out for talking **** :-"

i ( and i would guess most do ) accept that what you post on cyber space is there for ever .. so you need to be mindful of what you post .. i think most are in agreement with that statement

one of the little gimmicks i like about facebook is the birthday reminder tab
anyone you are friends with that lists there birthday , you get an email to say its such and suches birthday

you can email them a Happy Birthday wish .. not only are they dumbfounded you actually remembered there birthday , you probably create a warm and fuzzy feeling for them on the special day :D

i note with interest google have just launched a social site.. will i replace FB with it ? probably not .. unless they offer some brand new must have idea application AND offer a method to import ALL data from FB

a scenario which could be bad for FB users .. perhaps in the future you are involved in some crime .. by posting too much information on the net could give journalists a field day .. making it easier for them to track down friends and family and get a story ?? .... just hope i,m never involved in a crime that would warrant someone digging into my life :D

Facebook, Social Media - Google+

Post by lee » September 21, 2011, 5:06 pm

Google have recently launched Google+ which is basically yet another social network site. I wonder if Google will manage to compete with Facebook. Before facebook everyone was using myspace so anything is possible.

EDIT - Sorry Jeremy, just noticed you were talking about the same thing when I posted this.

@Jello - You're making my point which is that social media allows all life scrutiny that potentially FOREVER; and that dastardly FB has far, far more info out there. TYVM ;)

This site is passive with info. FB is doing things with your info about which most people have no clue and would be outraged if they knew.

Guilty as charged. I'm more concerned with my current life in Udon than my past life.....although there are days that I've wondered what my teenage sweetheart looks like today!
