Thanks Mate - been on the net and had a quick look but was wondering more along the lines of is it worth it? ie the changes of the system getting nicked - its going to be miles from the house- plus well - pump installation costs curious if its going to be cost effective in terms of growing a litle more ie ginger -pineapples - etc - new to this lol

My house is solared powered back in NZ, and I think it is worth it especially when the main power grid goes down and the water goes off.I will install the same when living udonside.
all depends on how much water you want to pump per minute, this will govern the size of system you will need..you can go 12volt, 24 volt or 240volt..the depth of the well will also be a factor, as some small pumps cant pump or suck to great heights..keep the pump, solar panel and battery close to the well..keep in a lockable box if you are worried about it going walkabout..buy aussie or american made gear, not chinese...PM me if you like if you need more answers..

If the equipment is going to be far from where people can see it on a regular basis, its an excellent bet that somebody will try to take some or all of it. Perhaps if you put it inside a sturdy, locked building, that would help. No idea what the market in stolen solar panels is around here, but my guess is that if it looks expensive and it isn't nailed down, its going to be history.

Very good points. (Knowing nothing on cost of solar) I would say, No. Neighbor here where I live had two pumps nicked about a couple of years ago. His place, I can see the roof line from my place and there is a police sub station on his same road and not far away, but there are no houses near his house.

My electrician did the replacement, and he thought it might have been past workers, but I had thought because you could see them from the road, that it was just someone that passed a lot. I think he has a lot of lights now, but not sure a good or bad idea. (should note he also has well, not sure why for city water ends not far from his house, in fact at police sub station)

If it going to be out in the sticks, what about a windmill. Elevate a tank to pump the water into and gravity feed to what you want watered. Or, bring a pump and generator out when you want to irrigate.

like one of the members suggested above, you could go for the portable petrol driven Honda water pumps, look similar to a small petrol generator..could mount the whole thing on wheels if you wanted to, or biff it in the boot of the car, as they are not that big, then you could lock it away in your garage.
