I know it means 'serves you right', but what does it literally mean in English?

Its a general expression with no literal english ,meaning, but is often used where we would say"Up to you" or alternatively "You not believe me"
The latter in the context where you have given someone advise that has been ignored with the inevitable consequence. :idea:
