As far as the village is concerned, if he is not listening, or doesn't understand, WTF does it matter what they are saying?
I would imagine that he (and all of us for that matter) would have more on our minds than what the local village gossip may be.
Or perhaps (for some), not.

It may not matter to him what they say. Having had the better part of 30 years married to an asian and knowing how some of them use the language barrier to say things about a person that they would not say to his face in his language is what made me comment on what they might be saying about him. He may feel loved and respected by the villagers and in fact be the butt of their jokes. Or they could be sincere.

I don't think I am being prejudiced in making that comment. It's a fact that it happens all the time. I didn't mean it to sound like I know that is what is going on. Just that I wonder if it is. How many guys want to have real honest friends and relationships with them? I bet most would want to have relationships be genuine.

Well Monsieur Biere Singe( :) ), the actual saying in French is "c'est elle qui porte la culotte dans le couple" --> which I have translated as 'it's her that wear the pants in the couple" ; the saying comes from the 18th century, when woman were supose to wear only skirts or dress and only the men the "culotte" (the 18th century name for "pantalons" yes ;) ).

Exactly. And that is what I am doing now. Tone rules and memorizing consonant classes are what I am presently struggling with. I can read Thai now, I know the alphabet, but often don't know the meaning of the word (yet).

Well I looked at his Thai wife and thought, 'she's got to look after three kids, she needs security'. But I don't think she loves the old Scrote, she even said she didn't think he was attractive. Good luck to them. However, I still think he's going to be bored stupid living on that bloody hill. :sleepy:
