Maybe his Keyboard Settings went haywire. In Windows 7 he can check them by going to Control Panel > Region & Language > Keyboards Tab > Change Keyboard > US International

you might have a sticky key

I would check that one or more of the keys arent stuck down

try cleaning the keyboard with an air duster

I very much doubt that this could be the cause. As I understand it, OP can type but the output on the screen is different from the input of the key strokes.
If the keyboard setting is in US International there's a chance you've been hit by a virus. Update your virus software and do a full scan. After that run Malwarebytes. If you don't have it, download it. It's free.

Two thoughts...
It does sound like a keyboard issue so...

He could download one of the free 'screen' keyboards that are readily available & try that...
I have used in the past..here are a couple he could try, but I am not recommending any particular one..

A keyboard that connects to the laptop might also be an option if the keyboard is proved to be completely wrecked. Tesco used to sell them for about 200 baht Thai-English....

He could also download this http://www.passmark.com/products/keytest.htm and test the keyboard.

30 day free trial.
