Sports channels UBC vs Cable

Postby pompui » July 8, 2009, 7:52 pm

Further to Galee's post under Cricket I wanted to make some generalisations and pros/cons for each UBC and Cable.

Home Cable has the supersports (South Africa based) and therefore some sports to them are very serious,so it is good for Cricket,Rugby,Motorsport,Tennis,Boxing,Golf,Fishing and limited games of English football.

UBC has more of an international feel to it, ie good for American sports,English football,Golf,Boxing,Tennis.

Overall I cannot decide on either so had to have both.Cable is good for advising in future months which sports they will be showing but I have never received the Home magazine, presumably it is not free, while the monthly magazine arrives on time for UBC and so can plan better.

Hope some forumites can advise of other sports(ie Athletics)that are preferred more by Cable or UBC and therefore if someone is unsure which to choose, if not choosing both, then at least hopefully some of the above info has helped. 8)

PS-I believe the Open Championship will be shown on both.

You can get a copy of the Home Cable Magazine from their shop.

As for sport, Supersport (local cable) is miles better than UBC if you're into non-American sports. I have also seen athletics on cable and they have Eurosport which features stuff like cycling and other stuff.

It is certainly hard pompui. I have never seen a "schedule" for cable, indeed I am inclined to believe that one does not exist. However I have seen one for Satellite, but not sure how accurate that it is..
The SuperSports schedule is (to say the least) complex....but, for anyone that does want to try here it is..

http://www.supersport.com/content.aspx? ... &view=full

The timings are -5 hours for Thailand (so add 5). Can sort by day/sport/channel.
However (as I have said B4) there are MORE channels than SLOTS on cable - so it is a bit of a 'gamble' if a specialist sport will be shown....

I think I'm going to follow Pompui's example and have both.

I miss my cricket, live Tour de France and prefer the commentators on Cable for F1. I cannot complain about Premier League football on UBC though. Getting a choice of every game is better coverage than in the UK. The coverage of Golf on UBC is OK, although I find it a bit of a let down after watching it in HD in the UK recently.

The only drawback will be that I'll have to fork out for another TV in the bedroom for the wife to watch UBC whilst I'm watching sport on Cable in the lounge.

I think it's at N12 on the map. At the intersection of Prajak Road and Adunyadet on the left hand side if you're going west. They've had the road dug up around there recently.

Strange but true, you can actually phone Home Cable and request certain sports on the day. They work 12 hour shifts and if you want to view something after 6pm phone at 6pm when the new shift starts and he will scramble it from the the inter-net if possible.Best to get your Thai partner to call. Not sure about the legality of it but it does happen.Ive been watching the start of an EPL game only for it to disappear and be replaced by German footie. You can actually see them scramble the game they want on-screen . . . I was sober at the time, anyone else seen this.Cant remember the telephone number but its got lots of 4`s in it.
Only complaint I would have about cable is when it rains you lose all channels.

I've had poor reception on the South African channels when it rains, but the Thai channels are OK. Keeps the Midget happy.

At the moment, it seems that they've got enough sports channels to keep pretty much everyone happy, which is goo. I'd like to know what the Thai chaps who control the channels think about the cricket though. :)

I have always found the other way around when we get the severe rainstorms,UBC goes offline pretty quickly using satelite dish and logically, if as the name suggests,Cable, then it is more likely to stay online. :-k

Trying to think back to beginning of the year and when I used Cable for sports and 6 nations Rugby,South African cricket touring, more recently the 20/20 cricket, confederations cup football, motor racing, some English football especially since UBC channels prefer a panel of Thais discussing the football match at half time. Have recently noticed on Supersport 2 during the afternoon that they get the Sky Sports News channel and therefore uptodate sports info around the world plus all the transfer talks prior to next seasons English premiership, long may that continue on Cable. =D>

UBC enjoyed American football and baseball, golf tournaments in USA although can be said enjoyed some of the local South African golf tournaments on Cable, the other footballing countries leagues ie Dutch,German,Italian.

So for the rest of the year Golf Open championship, football,on either and rest of Ashes tour on Cable and hopefully Athletics on either?

Is the Grand National ever broadcast on either UBC or Cable?

Apologies for not checking the website previously, thanks for the link.Appears complex in parts but at least Cable is favourable to Athletics, presumably the Grand National is still under exclusive rights to the BBC? so no show for expats here.

The only sport satellite supports better than cable is English Premier League.
Since UBC got the sole rights (about 2 seasons ago) live cable games are a thing of the past - before there always used to be at least couple a week. I would think this is down to some sort of 'copywrite' satellite have on live games in Thailand, rather than the fact the SA channels are not showing it.
Last season the 'old firm' games, plus a couple of other Celtic games were shown live on cable. Not sure if that will be the same this season as I believe the rights have gone to Sky/ESPN now....

Major boxing matches are supported better by UBC although bouts that appeal to Thais, i.e. Manny vs Hatton, do get shown on Thai stations. Been able to watch some good fights that would have cost big bucks in the states via PPV. No extra charge for UBC's Gold and Platinum subscribers.

We can't get Home or Udon cable out here in the boonies. A nephew installed a satellite dish and box for wife so no monthly charges with it. All she seems to watch are the Thai soap operas that could see on UBC. Keeps her happy.

NFL games on UBC in the fall makes it worth the money for me, also.

The Hatton fights (both of them) were live on Super Sports as well...(mores the pity :D :D ).
Yes NFL, Ice Hockey, Baseball & Basketball are not well supported as far as live games are concerned on cable....Highlights only from memory, could even just be a 5 minute 'run down' on the Blitz News Service.
