Squirrel trapping and relocation

Postby KB_Texas » November 5, 2011, 2:01 pm

It would seem that we have squirrels nesting in our attic. During the day, we can hear them digging around up there, but efforts to scare them off have not been successful.

Does anyone know of someone who can trap and relocate these critters? My wife does not want me to make squirrel stew out of them, so we need someone who can trap them and move them. I am not sure which ones are in the attic, but there are white squirrels I see in the trees outside the house at times, and also a tri-colored one that looks like a gray squirrel with a black mohawk down it's back and a tail that is white half way down to the tip.

Any help or information on who to call would be most appreciated.

Squirrel trapping and relocation

I can't recall ever seeing any squirrels around our place in Udon.. They don't seem to be the pests they are Stateside.. In BKK I've seen a few, particularly in Lumpini park but they all look rather unhealthy..

Squirrel trapping and relocation

Postby KB_Texas » November 6, 2011, 7:07 pm

Heh, i have at least three out here, and they all seem rather healthy. I had never seen a white squirrel before, but there are at least two around. The other looks like a Heinz 57 since it is tri-colored, looking like a gray squirrel with a black stripe down it's back, and a black and white tail. I have only seen that one a couple of times though.

I do not know about wildlife in Udon yet. Perhaps the white squirrel is normal, since I instantly found it in Google. The wife would prefer trapping and relocating them instead of shooting them, and honestly, so would I. The white ones a pretty exotic looking to me, but I think they are the ones in the attic.

Squirrel trapping and relocation

A neighbor bought a white squirrel from the jungle market on the Udon-NBLP highway and released it for his birthday. It scampers atop the mature mahoganey trees lining a nearby pond. Quite the entertainment while we enjoy our morning coffee.

If you happen to trap yours and want to release it, I'd be happy to offer it a home.

Squirrel trapping and relocation

If I was in the US, I would have already trapped them as I had traps at the farm for about any small critter up to raccoons and ground hogs. However, here I feel it would be better to find someone who understands the critters here, as I do not. So if any of you know or hear of anyone I can contact about it, please do let me know. In the interim, I am making them as uncomfortable as I possibly can, hoping it will persuade them to find a new home, outside of my home. ;)

All right...since nobody seems to know anyone who does trapping, does anyone know where one can buy a couple of small to medium live traps? (not claw traps) If so, I will try to catch these little buggers myself.

Our gardener uses traps like the one in the photo for big jungle rats (edible) and says they can be used for squirrels as well. Available in all good gardening stores, but for sure you'll find them on Makkaeng Rd, in between Srisuk and Phosri, as you're going from Srisuk, the stores are on the left hand side about 30m down Makkaeng. Price about 50 baht. They're called dahk (ดัก) in Thai. Our gardener said the squirrels really like red palm oil nuts, but if you don't have a tree available with the nuts, use some other sort of fruit.....banana, maybe a dog biscuit.
If you catch it and want it to have a good home, give me a pm and I'll pick it up. Our gardener will take care of it (and by that, I don't mean eat it).

Heh, good deal. I will stop and get a couple of the traps this weekend. That trap is exactly what I was thinking of. If we can coax the critter into the trap, I will send you a PM. Does your offer include whatever squirrels I happen to catch, or just the white ones? ;) My wife will be happy to hear it will not become dinner. :D

We'll take any squirrels as we have trees aplenty for them to play in. I sent you a pm with my phone number.

if it is a treadle type cage trap it should go off alright, but if it is the hook type, you may need to tie your bait on..you want to catch the squirrel first time if possible, otherwise it might become cage shy...we used to use a paste that would knock birds out, for sorting the native birds, from the introducted ones, then you could pick them up, warm them up in the oven alittle, and bring them back to life, but I think the cage should do ya..try a sack over it, if you have no luck, and spread nuts or bait around the front of the cage...as a wildlife ranger of some ten years, I would offer to help, but I am out of LOS at moment..

Maaka,

Thanks for the info, but perhaps the efforts to run the critter off have been successful. We have not heard it for 3 days now. If it comes back, I will indeed trap it.

rodger that KD..
I used to see the squirrel's in central Udon running along the powerlines in fronts of my digs. Good way for them to get up into your roof..I used to have rats in my roof, and realized they were climbing up the outside of the plastic drainpipes, and up the wooden posts that hold up my outdoor sunshade...the old grease on the downpipe soon fixed that, and some tin plating nailed around the wooden posts, done the trick..I could lie in bed at night and hear them run up the drainpipe, get to the grease and slide off onto the ground below..it was bliss..
