Way off the O.P., but since a MOD carried on too. Why not? I have a few friends in Laos currently in the dating seen, and one married very happily. I've never had a disappointing time there.

cetainly doesn't in my eye BM, thats the reason we have so many problems today, only certain types did well from the ' Empire' - the rest of us wer'e asked to ' get your legs blown off and go and live in a slum'
I will probably completley banned from this site for saying this - but the only man who truly understood it was ' Sir Oswald moseley' who said 'these people come back to nothing '

It would certainly have been "more of the same" if Moseley had got into power KE.
I know he was extremely popular in East London, but that was for what he SAID certainly not for what his policies actually were. Look at the actual policies of his pals Hitler & Mussolini - I don't think any German or Italian working class ever got anything but that is the direction you need to march in order to get your legs blown off!!!

To come back from the historical to the nowadays of Laos and laos girls, I understand they are quite a few who lives in Thailand isn't it ? Read some bad things about it around a few forum (young laos girls "imported" in Thailand for sexual industry etc). What's the real situation about laos people in Udon ?

Actually, for many countries that enjoyed Imerialistic rule, they were not worse off, however the infighting and other reasons left their county in a mess. As far as my historical knowledge goes, many countries enjoyed peace and a fair degree of prosperity, but as with all things after leaving various factions vied with each other for the supposed spoils, forgetting that they actually had to work to make the spolis, they do not come for free.
Yes I do agree that all European countries abused and treated the citizens of their colonies or conquests badly in some cases, however having been to Algeria and martinique, both French when I went, I found that the French were far more severe in their treatment than the British. That is my considered impartial view.

Med care in Laos is definitely atrocious which is why you'll see Lao car plates at all the Udon hospitals every weekend. Those Lao with money will NOT use Lao medical facilities. Generally, the Aussie clinic will NOT take someone not Aussie or in the Expat embassy community in Vientiane.

Aussie Clinic is stabilization only.. If you have major problems and go to the Aussie clinic they will do their best and then move you over to Nong khai or Udon in their ambulance. Expect to pay around $75 USD to talk with the Doctor.

Belgian/French clinic, semi-private with decent care, again, can stabilize only for any significant illness or injury and Medevac to Thailand. a bit cheaper than the Aussie clinic. I'm pretty sure this clinic will take anybody who'll pay.

Lao Government "Foreigner's" Clinic.. relatively cheap but low class care.. For a minor illness or injury this is an option..

Any other Lao hospital.. last resort only..

Lao laws for marriage to foreigners are strict.. Paperwork MUST be done properly. The bureaucrats WILL attempt to get an admission of pre-marital cohabitation (against the law in Lao) to extort fines. If you have everything in order and give the right answers everything could be processed in 90 days or so but that's with lotsa luck...

Lao people seem to me friendlier than Thai overall.. It's a smaller country and even in the not-booming metrolpolis of Vientiane, it projects a small town atmosphere. If living there, you can expect that anything you do will be common knowledge around town pretty quickly.
