Strange New ATM Message Today?

Postby cali4995 » September 3, 2009, 12:32 pm

went to the kasikorn machine this morning, selected english, then the amount i wanted to withdraw,
acknowledged the 150 baht fee, THEN i get yet another message saying i need to change my PIN for
security reasons? what? i've never seen this before? why is a thai atm asking me to change my PIN?
cancelled the transaction, looking over the machine everything seems normal? this is an account from
back in the states. i'm just very apprehensive with these machines here. walked down the street to
a krung-thai unit and withdrew without any problems? what was that all about? anybody else experience
this? it's a given i'm a spaz  but these machines here make me nervous. am i worrying over nothing?

You did exactly what I would have done cali, no reason that I can see for a Thai Bank to make such a request!

The bank usually tells you to change your pin number when you use your atm card for the first time. I've never seen an ATM randomly telling you to change your password.

Cali you did the correct move but I would suggest you go inside the bank & do your withdrawals it much safer
you pay 1% for cash advance let assume you want a 1000 dollars that cost you 10 bucks now subtract the 1% leaves you 990. bucks times that by the T.T rate which today is 34.16 that what you get in thai baht =
33880 baht. now mind you you can not draw 1K out of A.T.Machine that would be two transaction which would be 300 baht which is almost ten bucks but for the safety it worth the little extra IMHO

Hi,
Been getting that from that bank for a month or more nothing wrong. If you read it fully it advises you to change your pin number reg. for security reasons. Nothing wrong with that. It is mainly for the people who have got a account with that bank.
I may be wrong but i don't think you can change PIN no. at a different bank than what your card is from.
But as I say no hassle just advising you. Which is a good thing. Been using that banks ATM all the time, check my statments from my own bank every day online all O.K.
Cheers Doug.

well, i'm paranoid because there is so much fraud here? actually, the wording is slightly different
from what doug says? my initial impression was that if you did not change your pin, you would
not be able to proceed with the transaction? and my account is not with a local thai bank. just
exactly as doug says, it is not my home bank so why are they asking me to change the pin? oh
well, as had been said before, open a local acct and just wire transfer some money every month
these atm machines here always seem to be so erratic. i can't even remember the number of
folks i've come across, standing next to the machine who have had their card eaten. :?

Hi, Cali
No need to change your bank. The wording states that you should change your pin number reg. THIS IS ONLY ADVISE. Which is good. And they do not ask you to change your pin number there. Take no notice, and you will be able to procede with your transaction, This has happened to me often and you are still able to procede with your transaction. IT IS ONLY A ADVISE NOTICE, please check fully. I at 0715 this morning went to ATM and got this notice, Which is only advisory, and withdrew money. Please check this , if i am am wrong i apoligse. I went into the bank yesterday and they confirmed what i was saying and said what is the problem, as if i was stupid. I said no I was checking it for a
friend. Felt like a Idiot.
Cheers Doug.
Please Please go to the ATM again and read. no need to withdraw money.

douglas, thanks for your pains in making that clarification. as it was the 1st time i viewed the
