What is available for Stroke Rehabilitation, including speech therapy? Are such services provided in Udon, if yes where? Am checking for an American friend who does not speak Thai.

AEK has a reasonable PT unit, as do the others, but like all units, they are busy and the rehab is very much alligned to the physical rehab, suchs as limbs, balance, use of aides, etc. Havent seen any speech therapists, Im sure there are some and Thai only ?? BKK might have english speaking therapists ?

Sirakarin hospital in Khon Kaen, which does have a major neurosurgery unit, might have some additional services, but again an English speaking speech therapist will be a long shot i imagine? -

when i say English speaking, I mean trained in speech therapy for the english language, not just conversational english which im sure they are capable of.

I had a stroke in Udon last year. The acute treatment at AEK Udon Hospital did not meet any standards of appropriate treatment for the first 3 hours and remained far under standard treatment methods until I checked out and flew to Bangkok for treatment. Luckily, I was not disabled to the point of not being able to travel and had enough knowledge to know that the treatment I was getting was inappropriate and inadequate. Although there are few options for the most important 3 hours after onset. The neurologist who eventually saw me more than 8 hours after onset could not speak English well enough to convey her diagnosis, treatment plan, or prognosis.

I know of others with brain trauma (stroke and accident) in Udon who were unable to seek other treatment, and in my opinion, they suffered severely from substandard treatment. Treatment I've seen here was more primitive than that I practiced as a medical assistant on a neurological ward in the US Army in the 1960's.

I don't believe your friend will find appropriate stroke rehabilitation in Udon Thani. Hospitals often offer no supervised rehab services, even basic respiratory and physical rehab for surgical recovery.
