Sugar free drinks

Postby lee » February 7, 2012, 11:24 am

Thailand seems to be going in the opposite direction when it comes to sugar free drinks. Over the past year or so drinks like Coke Zero, Coke light, Pepsi Max seem to be gradually fading out. I can no longer find them in the supermarkets, even 7-11's and gas stations don't stock them these days.

My parents will be visiting soon and my step-father is a diabetic, so if any of you guys know where you can buy it these days I'd appreciate the info. I try to avoid the original versions myself because there's way too much sugar in them and it's not good for the waistline.

Sugar free drinks

My understanding is that the Pepsi factory near Bangkok was badly damaged in the floods last year.

Since coming back into production they have been concentrating on "normal" Pepsi, to the detriment of (my favourite) Pepsi Max - which sugar-addicted Thais buy far less of.

I was also told that Pepsi will move to a new manufacturing plant this year.

I have seen some Coke Zero around recently, but again, may be the same story (less the factory problems) as Pepsi.

Hopefully Pepsi Max will be on the shelves again soon. [-o<

Lee,

I heard the same as Jack, production bottlenecks due to the flooding in Bangkok.
You would have thought there would be other factories in the regions of Thailand.
I'm a diabectic I stick to Coke Zero, Pepsi Max a close second. The bottles of both have totally vanished.
Makro's have regular stocks of Coke Light, (cans) were snapped up early in the day by shop owners.
I was drinking soda water with a little juice when I could not get any Diet Coke.
Can now get the cans of Coke Light in Makro, the supply seems to be stabalizing.
A few weeks ago you could not get Leo Beer anywhere, now it's back.
Why was that, as it's brewed (sic) in Khon Kaen?

I wondered that so I asked. Apparently it was a shortage of bottles and cans which were made by a factory in the flood zone.Back to normal now though but with a price hike .

Light, refreshing and sugar free. Although it's no good if you intend to drive or concentrate.

I find them everywhere now.

Immediately after the floods, there was a problem getting stock up here. It seems to almost be back to normal now.

Are there any implications/problems with drinking soda water, that anyone knows of? I sometimes drink that when avoiding alcohol and sugary drinks.

I haven't looked at OTs' suggestion, but the others seem fraught with danger & it would, according to these reports be safer to drink water from the Klong that oozes through Udon... :D

Soda Water first...
Health Risks of Carbonated Water

http://www.livestrong.com/article/31317 ... ted-water/

Bicarbonate powder or baking soda can be added to water to produce a fizzy effervescence, but this produces alkaline water and is different from carbonation. Pure carbonated water has few health risks, but most commercial soda water contains some salt and acid derived from sodium, potassium and phosphorus, which can pose health risks in large quantities.

I think the case against aspartame has been somewhat overstated.

Aspartame has been found to be safe for human consumption by more than ninety countries worldwide, with FDA officials describing aspartame as "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved" and its safety as "clear cut". The weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe as a non-nutritive sweetener.

A friend once mentioned that soda water was not good for bones and joints, but I'd seen or heard nothing to substantiate that. Thank you for that link Bob. I guess I'll have to opt for plain old water then.

I've always tried to avoid aspartame (Nutrasweet) since I saw a "World in Action" programme on the TV some decades ago, which was doing an expose of a company that was involved in testing of aspartame. They interviewed a number of employees (maybe ex employees) who said that it was tested on rats and when one died (possibly from brain tumour - I can't remember), which happened not infrequently during the testing, the dead rat was removed from the test and replaced with another live one, without the fact being recorded in their records. The programme went on to argue that aspartame should never have been approved for use. Hence I avoid it.

I think you'll find these diet drinks are selling out pretty quick and the stock being shipped in is not up to what it was before. You may have to visit several different locations before finding one with diet drinks. Tops seems to have a pretty decent supply most of the time probably because not as many people shop there as the other locations. I was in the Tesco Lotus Express store in Nong Samrong last night and they had a good supply of Cole Zero in 1.25L bottles.
