Purple "International Transit Book" for the car.. You get it from the Thai Vehicle registration office. It's similar to a passport for your car.. No book, and you can't enter Laos.. Also, you'll need to check on Lao liability insurance which should be cheap..

Another question. From this thread and others in the forum, taking personal car across bridge to Laos doesn't seem like a great option so wondering if there is a secure area to park at the bridge for a day or so (i.e., the new bridge at Mukdahan has a fenced parking lot)?

Suppose you could leave car at Udon Airport lot and take limo to NK bridge but that seems like more of a hassle than just parking at the bridge and catching bus to cross over to Laos side.

There is 'secure' parking (completely enclosed behind a wire fence) behind & by the shops on the right hand side of the road as you go towards the bridge - so easy walking distance. From memory it is about 100 bhat a day.
