Temporary Motorbike Insurance

Postby InAsia » January 3, 2007, 4:19 am

Ray's recent post indicated the need to have proper documents and insurance if involved in an accident.

Would anyone happen to know if motorbike insurance is available for a two-month stay in Udon? I will be on a tourist visa and have an international driver license and a home D/L, each with a motorcycle endorsement.

I have been renting a motorbike from a storefront near the Complex for 250 Bt./day, but the woman there just calls someone to deliver the bike. It comes without registration, but with a rental contract, and she knows nothing about how to insure it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

if you have a rental agreement, then she is extremely ignorant or if something happens, she doesn't want you to use her insurance carrier, which is mandatory for her to have. also, 250 baht a day is a bit steep, especially if no insurance coverage. when i rent bikes in tourist areas, usually 150-200 a day w/insurance, and you have option of additional ins for 50 more baht a day, which i pass on, as the coverage is a joke anyway. but you should at least have madatory 3rd party insurance. if not paid in advance, may i suggest using someone else, maybe steve's bar or along there, i used to see adverts for bike rental where things may be explained a little better. your own insurance coverage in home country may cover you in some instances. good luck.

I would change rental places that is just a plain and simple lie. It is so easy to get the insurance that is available and a requirment to get the new registration each year.

At worst case scenario you could insure a bike for less then 200 baht a year. I would really wonder is the bike is legal. May or may not be, unregistered bikes on the road certainly is nothing new here.

The insurance you are quoting is PLB, its a mandatory 3rd party coverage, its very limited in its coverage in that it covers medical bills only up to an amount of ( I believe) 30,000 baht. Its does not cover yr property or that of the other party. Full insurance for a MC is very difficult to obtain, most companies will not insure and those that do usually require you hold other insurance with them, then its only available for bikes up to 5 years old.
