BREAKING NEWS

Thai quality of life improves in 2007

The quality of life for Thais in 2007 is projected to improve from last year with minimum income to be raised to Bt23,000 (US$ 657) per head per year, up from Bt20,000 in 2006, a senior Interior Ministry official said Saturday.

Jaruphong Phondej, deputy director-general of the Community Development Department, said his agency is now compiling information on health, housing, education, income and the attitude of the public towards community development.

Indicators on these issues are revised every five years in line with the five-year National Economic and Social Development Plan. The 10th Plan began October 1, 2006 and ends September 30, 2011.

According to Mr. Jaruphong, the minimum income of Thais this year is projected to increase to Bt23,000 per head per year, up from Bt20,000 (US$ 570) per head in 2006.

This year's complete information is anticipated to be announced on March 31. (TNA)

If that is correct, that would mean that foreign teachers here who get paid for only 9 months a year are making less than the minimum income of Thais...

Wow! Teachers make less than 23,000 baht per year over the 12 months?

How can that poster be offering 35,000 baht per month to teach?

Something isn't adding up here ... I can't imagine wanting to work for less than 2,000 baht per month.

I think a re-read is required here folks - Cookie's opening paragraph is a bit misleading

Minimum income = TBH23,000 per year = TBH1,916 per month.

You are correct Jack. The re-read was necessary. :D

It should have read less than 23,000 per month - not per year. Most schools do not pay for holidays or during summer vacation. Hence, one can figure that the actual working year is only about 9 months a year. 9 x 30,000 = 270,000 per year - divided by 12 ='s 22,500 per month.

We don't quite know for sure what the poster is offering. If it is 35,000 year round, then that isn't too bad of a salary in general, assuming that the teacher is working only 9 months a year. However, if it is only paid for 9 months a year, then it is not all that attractive. That would then work out to 26,250 per year. If one figures an "average" of 20 working days per month and factors in that the working hours are from 7:30 to 4:30 - then the hourly wage per annum is only 140.27 Baht per hour. Not very attractive in my estimation.

Thailand: per capita income

Table 1: National Average Per Capita Income using PPP method

PPP Method = The Purchasing power parity (PPP) theory was developed by Gustav Cassel in 1920. It is the method of using the long-run equilibrium exchange rate of two currencies to equalize the currencies' purchasing power. It is based on the law of one price, the idea that, in an efficient market, identical goods must have only one price.

Per PPP Method #87 of 208 countries: Thailand 7,450 U.S. Dollars per year

I read that in 1998 the average monthly wage was 908 TB. Can't see how it would have risen to 23,000 in 9 years. I reckon the report is per year. That would fit the lifestyles of most of the villagers I know. Maybe one or two memebers of the family earning a few thousand a month, supporting Mama Yai, Papa Yai, Mama, Papa and loads of little kids.

Of course the official figures wouldn't account for all the earnings the farmers make on the side....

I always thought the average monthly wage in the North East was around 4500. I guess the average would still work out if only one or two people in the family actually earned.

Seems very low though......

I think it can easily be about a lot of peoples minimum monthly income!

I have been told, that a lot of Thai people work for a small salary.
A Thai girl who works in a shop, or as a cook in a restaurant, can earn between 5000 and 6000 Bath per month in Bangkok.
Room maids in hotels get about 3000 Bath per month.
But they are lucky they have a decent job.
People who work in the rice fields, get between 100 and 150 Bath a day. But they don't have work every day of the year.
Many people are poor, and have big debts.
I think a lot of Thai people work under the mimimum income, per month or per year. If they have work at all.

I knew there had to be something misconstrued between months and per year. Thanks for the clarification.

Doc, I agree with you regarding that teaching "offer" ... I have become skeptical, as well.

the way i understand it is that the original post was stating what the " minimum annual income"( "wages",what is the legally lowest amount payable by an employer)per person was and that figure is 23000baht,or just under 2000baht per month, its not saying for what job its for its just a lowest minimum income(per annum) :D

I was shocked when my girlfriend told me how much she makes as it is over a $1000 US a month. This seems to be quite standard for office work with multinationals in Bangkok. If she was to accept a position in Korat she would get a couple of thousand baht more as an education bonus because of her high level of education and the trouble in attracting educated to the rural provinces.

Standard wage for seasonal field work planting/harvesting rice is 200 BAHT per day with lunch provided by the land owner.. That's about 0700-1900 each day worked with multiple breaks during the day..
