Thai Evening Restaurants

Postby parrot » December 17, 2009, 3:58 pm

I'm looking for good quality outdoorish strictly Thai-type restaurant....suitable for family, party. Berng Mai Hawm, out near Index was very good last time we went late last year. Nice atmosphere, staff, high quality food without the very high prices.
We ate at the one at the T-intersection at Kilo 5, just after CarreFour and just before the new Lotus. Nice pond, staff was okay, but food wasn't so hot.

Looking for any suggestions from those of you who have eaten out recently.

Direction from the Ring Road & Nong Khai road intersection: drive toward Nong Khai for a couple of minutes, then turn left on the easy-to-miss road just before the ESSO station.
In another couple of minutes on your left is Macha (sign only in Thai). You can watch the fish fight for the bread pieces that you can drop on them.
Another couple minutes down the road on the same side is Sabai Sabai Fishing something. You can fish; most do, I do not. I only eat the food made in their restaurant.
Food is good and very reasonably priced at both.

Right next to Big C on the corner of the major intersection is a very well priced outdoor restaurent.

Good service, ( Penguins from uni ) Band, light thai music, not too loud.

Menu very good, and well priced.

Usually a good sign if a restaurant is full of Thai.

One that's always very popular, lunchtime or evening, is that on the corner of the junction of the Nong Khai highway and the turning west to Ban Phu. Big place, lake surrounded by numerous sala (sit on the boards job) but also has large covered areas with normal seating. You can't really miss it. Cars park up alongside where you eat. Been there several times and my company has always rated the food quality, as have I. Very reasonable prices. Many party groups use it and how many are involved will decide whether you go for sala, or the larger areas. If large party, maybe you want to check on necessity to reserve. Personally, I feel more comfortable with chair/table, but the Thai can sit comfortably on the floor for hours! Wife tells me name is Kalasin Goong Pao (Kalasin Prawn Fired???).

In town, difficult to beat Maa Ya (spelling? Mother Ya's restaurant, but I could be very wrong on that). Off Phosi Rd, first left after the Fountain Circle, then take a right down small soi. Very good reputation, excellent food and prices. Not that big a place, slightly odd design IMO. Always reminds me of an old-fashioned ice cream parlour, or Italian pizza place. Almost expect to find Al Capone sitting there! Ground floor level is, I think, particularly given over to ice-creams. Again, might be wise to check out beforehand, if you're interested.

I second the Kalasin Goong Pao. Been there several times with the family, and they always speak highly. Their duck is a specialty.

I need more help in finding Kalasin Goong Pao.
How far up toward Nong Khai from the Ring Road?
Is there some sort of a marker at the turn-off from the Nong Khai Road?

Headed towards Nong Khai, turn left at HWY 2021. After the turn it is immediately on your left.

It is about 11 kms from the ring road. There is a large green overhead sign pointing to Ban Phu - you can't miss it.
