Thai Orchid Resturant.

Postby beer monkey » December 27, 2006, 9:40 pm

After reading a few members talking of The Thai Orchid Resturant in Udon, thought i would try it for myself.
For those that have'nt been already,Its situated at Nong Sim Lake, visited around 7.00pm plenty of parking available, the resturant is well set out, with plenty of wood and plants and trees, and i there was'nt a plastic chair in sight, all wood tables and chairs the perfect setting, a lonesome man singing nice mellow songs at one end also has a big screen to look at, fast service by the staff and most of the food arrived with-in 10 mins, the food itself was a very high standard and presented well, had panang goong (prawns in panang curry sauce) Moo manao (pork with lime/chillies) pad boisian (noddles with seafood) yam hasahi ( deep fried chicken skin/cashews/prawns/squid in a nam jim nam pa-wan) grilled pork, and pork with green beans, A-roi mahk mahk, 1st class food in great surroundings.

Another good point was hardly no passing traffic, only the odd motor-bike or pick-up passed with-in over 1 hour.
For those that have'nt been take a look i don't think you would be dissapointed. The bill came to 680 baht 6 dishes 2 rice 4 bottles of small coke(2 people).
below a pic of 5 of the dishe's.(some have already be dipped into(by me + the Mrs) before i took the pic) Enjoy !!

We were there just a few nights before and were also impressed with the food. I do not drive and the tuk-tuk traffic was non-existant for the ride home. A staff member took us in their "taxi". Nice people. Not ped ped enough for me but I probably was not emphatic enough regarding the Tom Ka Gai, which was excellent, just not hot enough. It's rare that anyone makes it ped ped enough for me and the staff usually gets a good laugh when they see me loading chilis on. "Farang Ba!"
Nice pictures by the way.
I need to remember to bring the camera on more evening outings.

Good Review and picture there Beer Monkey.

A meal like that in a Thai Resturant in London what set you back around ฃ45, not far off $90. With no entertainment. Add 10% Service charge & ฃ6 for the steamed Hom Mali.

popped back there last night to check if it was like the first time....same same as first visit, real good !!!

The Tom-yum goong was spot on, with the thicker soup just as i prefer.
Crispy Duck is on the menu and was great served on a bed of crispy noodles.
deep fried Pak-boong (morning glory) with a dipping sauce was also a fav of mine.

showed the gf the pictures you took and told her about Thai Orchid. she said it's good food but they gave small portions and pricier than other places. but by looking at beer monkey's pictures, it seems like they are very generous on the portion! i'm still going there for the cripsy duck and crispy chicken skin!! i'm hungry

just to add, if you are not bored with my visits, Tonight the Crispy Duck was even crispier and was extra special, The Tom-yum was extra hot, and there was a re-fill of soup when it was nearly finished, A good looking tiger girl was pouring my beer whilst i was there....the place was 80% full at around 8.30pm ok maybe as its friday, but the place was as great as ever.!!

Sorry for putting a bit of a dampener on this mouth watering and delicious thread, but I recently had a medical and was told that my LDL cholesterol was far too high.

I was advised by the doctor that my propensity for eating crispy duck and chicken skin (two of my favourites) were the probable cause of my high LDL Cholesterol

Thai Orchid

Postby FrazeeDK » January 8, 2007, 11:42 pm

I took the string's advice and we dropped by Thai Orchid on Sunday Night at about 1715.. Only one table was occupied and the parking lot was empty.. There were three of us.. We ordered a variety of dishes to share and found everything was great.. As mentioned before, about 10 minutes from ordering to the first dish and they spaced them out. All came piping hot.. Service was quietly attentive with the server waiting about 5 meters away. Total price for a pitcher of Beer Heineken, 6 separate course plates, and a large bowl of rice was about 640 Baht..
We had plenty of left overs to take home too.

Go early between 5 and 5:30, no crowds, and plenty of space fo park.
Music played but very low key.. You can converse easily.
Find a table that blocks the rays of the sunset from your eyes..
Food is very very good (and I'm not a big Thai food eater)

Took the family to Thai Orchid last night, at 8 Pm the place was almost deserted (too cold for most) But would echo the general sentiment expresed here. Excellent food, priced towards the top end for Udon but I regarded it as good value all the same.
What I really liked was the pleasant background music, no bloody Mor Lam

Nice surroundings and no plastic chairs that bend and collapse under my 100Kg frame. Full marks to this place as they have thought of most things, even a small playground for the kids. They did have a big screen showing some football :( but happily no sound. Only one slight downside in that the food was brought all at the same time, 4 dishes so some was barely warm half way thru.

Sadly, only one beer girl. a tiger who had a very watchable rear end.

After all the reviews on here thought I would try it last night. First impressions. No parking security to park the car or even to guide you in.
Climbed steps to see a large restaurant with only four tables occupied, band playing, large screen football on, no one to meet and greet you. stood for a little while, whiskey in hand, wife on arm, no one came, so made my own difficult decision where to sit. Having done so a server came across, no sawadee or greeting, a beer girl, so she rapidly lost interest when she saw I had own bottle. Eventually a waitress arrived, gave me an English menu, which included such delights as a whole page described as" under the sun"
Which in Thai under, I read as 'sun dried" logical really , silly me! Comparing prices with the Thai language version, several items appeared to be more expensive, which upon questioning was informed " farang eat more"! Could be , I suppose, but chose to order from Thai menu.Ordered three dishes, all quickly served and piping hot, The food was delicious and very large portions, although priced a little above similar establishments. To summarise. The meal , without fault, the service, could be better. We wanted a romantic evening, well the nearest occupied table seemed miles away, how alone can you get?Pleasant unobtrusive music.
Will definitely try again, hopefully it will be busier and have more ambience. For those that have read my previous posts, my tip rating was 25 baht.
