Thai tax on income from abroad

Postby Brian Davis » March 2, 2010, 9:35 pm

A Norwegian friend mentioned casually today that someone he knew was paying Thai tax on money brought into the country from abroad. Not something I've ever given any thought to. I live only off my UK pensions, transferring as and when to live on.

But from http://www.rd.go.th/publish/6045.0.html I extracted below:-

Taxpayers are classified into “resident” and “non-resident”. “Resident” means any person residing in Thailand for a period or periods aggregating more than 180 days in any tax (calendar) year. A resident of Thailand is liable to pay tax on income from sources in Thailand as well as on the portion of income from foreign sources that is brought into Thailand. A non-resident is, however, subject to tax only on income from sources in Thailand.

Might this include pension money? Does any 'resident' here with income only from his home country pensions pay tax?
Maybe I should be :-$ 8-[

I'm no expert, but if your pension is subject to tax in your home country than your not required to pay taxes here. Provided there's a tax treaty between your home country & Thailand.

Check here to see if your home country is listed and click on PDF file for more info.

Thank you papaguido. It's the same website, so I should have looked further. Uk is, as one would think, listed, so amidst all of the legal-type language, seems my concern was unfounded. What with exchange rates, trying to finish a house, I don't need another issue which would cut into money I have to live here. [-o<
I'll mention this to the Norwegian, as he may have gone off at a tangent too.
