Thai-Tiger Airways new joint venture

Postby arjay » August 2, 2010, 4:25 pm

I just heard on CNBC, that Thai Airways and Tiger airways are launching a new low cost airline joint venture in the first quarter of next year.

It will be 51% owned by Thai and 49% owned by Tiger. They will be buying some new A320 airbuses to operate on their routes which are yet to be sorted out.

This gives a bit more background information, but unfortunately nothing more on routes - other than to say it will be headquartered in Bangkok, and the new JV will not operate on routes currently flown by Thai eg domestically in Thailand I assume.

Hopefully one of the first routes considered will be re-establishment of Udon Thani - Singapore. =D> =D> =D>

I may be mistaken, but didn't Tiger once fly DIRECT Singapore-Udon?
If not, then a friend from Singapore, a regular visitor to Udon, was often talking about the possibility, as it would obviously simplify his travel arrangements.

Looks like jackspratt has answered my question already!

Yes, Tiger definitely flew Sing/UT direct. From memory it was from late 2006 for about 12 or 15 months. I flew with them a couple of times either way, and was peed off when they closed the route seemingly because they decided to use the plane on the (then) newly opened Australian operations.

I doubt I would fly with them again to/from Oz, but you certainly have a lot more options in and out of Singapore.

Am a frequent business traveller and flew Singapore to Udon and vv many times on Tiger, very convenient and reasonable price. The last time was the morning after we committed to buy a house and move from Phuket to Udon Thani. On that fateful flight to Singapore, we learned Tiger would discontinue the route.

Having an international "gateway" near home makes access much easier so hope this route is revived. What about Udon to Hong Kong? Air Asia should consider even 3-4x per week.

Those Tiger flights seemed full enough, though who knows about profitability.

Dont forget Tiger now charge u a fee just to check in , in Oz.

TG already have a JV with Nok , so they arent going to compete aginst them to start off with.

Singapor to Udon is an option, but is it viable, Lao tourism will benefit and god more backpackers staying 1 night in Udon, all comoeteing with the locals for the cheapest, warmest place to sit on 1 beer for an hour. LOL

Maybe Wazza but the other way round I found it to be an excellent gateway to Europe without going through BK. It was always full whenever I used it. The only downside was they landed at a special budget terminal in Singapore and you had to get the airport train to the international terminals, but surely anything is better than swampy . I suspect the problem was more to do with immigration and customs having to be staffed in Udon for just one flight a day , rather than profitability of operation .

Good point. I wonder if there will be more international traffic coming through Udon now it now has an Immigration office located there. I did hear somewhere that it was going to be used for Indochina routes.

Just when you think   :-"
A new immigration office is being built in the same area as the existing police station . Estimated opening , early next year .We could do with more international flights though. I am sure they would be utilised .

I know it's jumping the gun, but if there were to be a Singapore-UT route it would make my life a whole lot better. Currently I have to spend overnight in Singapore meaning associated costs as well as the waste of a day. Fingers crossed.

So there is no longer an immigration office located in the old airport terminal ? Seems strange considering it was opened less than a year ago.

Just booked Perth - Bangkok with Tiger at $840.00 return with Window Seat on each sector. Booking Fee was $24.00, Seats $8.00 each per sector. Leave Perth at 21.30 arrive Bkk 0800 with a Tree Hour stopover in Singapore. Did the Singa - Udon thing three times, what a blessing that was. Hope to see it again soon =D>

OT you really must keep up at the back. It would appear its not only your sound box not working so I will explain in as simple language as I can .You suggested that as immigration was 'at the airport" it might lead to more international flights. My reply"Just when you think" Then I went on to explain that a new immigration office was being built and was scheduled to open next year.I never said the present one was closed. YET!.

To reiterate for everyone .

THE IMMIGRATION AT THE AIRPORT IS NOT CLOSED IT IS STILL OPEN AND WILL REMAIN SO FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE DESPITE THE RAMBLINGS OF A CERTAIN OLD TIMER .

Bad news for those hoping Thai-Tiger Airways (TTA) would operate from Udon to Singapore. Following quote from Bangkok post
"TTA plans initially to operate eight routes out of Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phuket, Chiang Mai, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Macau, Chennai, Shenzhen and Phuket-Chiang Mai." You may see the full story at below link as part of Nok Airs plans to expand.
