I'm sorry to hear that Jeremy. Hope you get sorted out again quickly.

I hope you've still got the Xmas music.

They sound not to be too professional if they found it necessary to take from the charity box.

Just to eliminate myself from any enquiries/suspicion, I took an early 9.00 am breakfast at the Book House friday morning, and must admit I did get up and take a look around, but I was only casing the chocolate cakes. :D

Jeremy if you have not got a replacement yet then take a look here..
http://www.ptwsystem.com/system_new1/price/?grp_biss=TS
Most of the site is in English & they seem to have some Desktops not too expensive..they sell the monitors separately on the really cheap offerings..
They are the place next door to J.I.B. computers.

They also do some security, camera & alarm stuff if you are still considering that route rather than a human guard.. :D

not updated here for ages ,

many years ago when i was in Jersey ( the channel islands ) , i remember going to a really unique BBQ place
they themed the BBQ as a wild west style , pick your own uncooked meat ( all priced with little flags) choose from a selection of marinades and stand over a custom made BBQ and cook to your own liking.. when you finished cooking your meats, be it sausages or steaks or chops etc , you then went to the salad bar and chose from a selection of salads .. the staff were dressed as cowboys and indians , the restaurant tables were set in old wagon trains with the tarpaulin roofs .

well we,re not going that far at The Bookhouse , but we will be introducing a weekly BBQ night along the same idea .. still a few weeks away from launch but we are working on sauces ,marinades and salads at the moment !!

we are also going to introduce an Everything Chicken - weekly Themed Day .. just deciding on which is our quietest day of the week. you,ll be able to choose from about 20 chicken dishes , all for the same set price including a complimentary soft drink

we have restarted selling our frozen products from our new , upright frozen display cabinet .. we have called it The Bookhouse - No Frills Range of Microwave Ready Meals

a big range of curries, pies, soups , casseroles, cheesecakes, cottage pies etc etc .. priced mainly at 85B to 140B .. though we are offering a special at the moment .. any 5 takeaway meals normally priced at 120B .. 5 for 500B !!! ... we are not offering anything new , just a new way to sell our excisting product range
its the same food cooked and served by Nok in our restaurant , but no frills, no salad, no chips, no service staff or washing up !! and all provided in microwavable containers at an affordable cook at home price

our regular customers will remember we used to offer this service , but did stop for a while , however , now our staffing levels have reached 14 people , we are looking at ways to utilise our staff better during quiet periods

i am also investigating the feasability of opening a small , specialist retail shop within our current location, offering supplies of a specialist nature. something not being offered by any other western business owner. details will follow as i know more.

the business it self is doing better than we anticipated in its new location and on many nights , our all Thai group customers, outnumber western which is a really positive sign . hopefully after this high season finishes , we wont see our revenue fall too much and can keep in employment our current staff

the new website has gone live - www.thebookhouseandcoffeeshop.com although not quite finished .
the new menus are nearly finished !!! just a few incorrect Thai translations to deal with.

we have 2 different bands on over 5 nights a week now , vocals and guitars playing nice soft music which appears to be well recieved by our customers

new uniforms for the staff are being embroidered and are very stylish !!

and a big public congratulations to Nok who passed her driving test on first attempt just a few days ago..

see you soon

It's not often businesses get praise, normally only complaints or bad reveiws.
I would really like to praise the bookhouse and coffee shop.
Returned home from Udon about a week ago,we were there for about 15 days, ate lunch at the bookhouse about 12 of them, and dinner probably 3 times.
The food was always good,I ate mainly farang food,my wife ate Thai.
The girls were always friendy and attentive, and the service was always good.
The atmosphere is good, lovely sitting out the front, looking over the lake, and out the back by the water feature is very relaxing, never sat inside, but I;m sure that would be enjoyable too.
Jeremy was always helpful if I ever needed some advice, whether it be where to buy something,or advice on large print I wanted done.
So from me and my wife,a big Thankyou to Jeremy,Nok,and the girls, looking forward to eating there agan when we return in September.
They also make a great cuppucino.
Keep up the good work

Well Hello Sailor *****^^
its been quite a long time since i posted a business update here, there and anywhere else for that matter
Mrs L or "Nok has been busy holding the fort while i,ve been off gallivanting around the world, well 3 weeks in the UK, a week in sunny Spain and a day in Wales .. and as many of our regular customers will know , we shut for a week to have a nice family holiday and give Nok a well earned/deserved break from the sweltering heat of the kitchen. ( quite lucky we found the ankle shackle key really  )

whats new ? well our infamous menus have been delivered and well worth the wait i think.. a very nice quality print job, oozing professionalism from all those concerned and bringing with it a whole load of new menu items as well as doubling our Thai Food offerings.

The Heat - even i,ve been going to Central to cash in on the free Air Con offered . even though i,ve been living in Asia for many years i cannot remember being affected by the heat as much as i have this year, perhaps its because i,m getting older but ..PHEW ** looking at ways to air-con The Bookhouse cost effectively made me realise i couldnt air-con the main restaurant, purely because of its design . too big and too open. The next best area to air-con is the back room where the books used to be housed. this area can provide seating for about 16/20 people and once we,ve ripped out the current frontage and replaced with all glass, it will make a perfect dining area and still with fabulous view across the lake .

so we,ve moved out the books from this room, temporarily into the main restaurant , to enable us to start work decorating etc. Book sales have increased dramatically because they are more visible but personally i dont like the "feel" the presence of the books so prominently, has changed the ambiance

rest assured this is only temporary. the books will be housed slightly to the left of the old location where we intend to concrete the floor and put a roof over the existing, non used passageway .. we can have two lines of bookshelves tight against the walls where the customer can walk through the middle and browse easily.

credit card usage has not been as high as i anticipated although the biggest restaurant spend so far ( over 7000 baht for one table ) was done on the plastic and included 2 bottles of wine .

Wine - although we have been selling wine by the glass ever since we opened The Bookhouse, we havent been in a position to carry a decent multi country selection untill recently. we purchased about 70 bottles of wine from all over the world with prices ranging between 700baht to 1900 baht a bottle

there is a whole host of information on the net regarding wine importation into Thailand, all the taxes, rules and regulations . to be clear i did not import our wines, merely bought from importers .. Australian wine is by far the best value in Thailand due to the special trade arrangements between Thailand and Australia and a reduction in one of the 7 or 8 tariffs on each bottle that Australia enjoys !! ( did you no there is a % from each import that goes to the Thai Health System .. )

the front of our business is now finished, the 1.5 meter roof extension is on, bringing rain outside the terrace dining area rather than inside during heavy rainfall !!
we have roofed over the front smoking area so no more soggy cigs ;) the dust has settled over our decision to allow smoking only in designated areas. the reasons for this, primarily by non smokers complaining of smoke drifting there way when eating, was perfectly justified, as well as having discussions with the alcohol and tobacco department over whether our previous smokers area was breaching Thai rules and making us ( and the customer) liable for a fine ..

Water - seeing as how our water bills shot up to nearly 5000baht a MONTH !!!!!! we did some investigating . our fish pond and water fall feature in the garden area was losing about 40% volume every few days and turning green with algi quite quickly .. i initially thought evaporation or leak, so we covered the top of the pond ( about 2 meters high) with netting .. this basically cured the algi issue but we were still left with mass water loss .. we emptied the pond, resealed/tiled/grouted to no effect, we then discovered the wall of the water feature was not sealed properly and by switching off the waterfall pumps the water has stayed at a reasonable level .. turns out there are 3 levels of paying your water and rates applicable, these being household, business small and business big, our water meter reading guy decided we were big business and changed our tariff to the highest ... we managed to get it changed back again and this months bill was less than 2000baht compared to 4700 last month !!

then we run out of mains water .. but discovered everyone in Nong Sim area had too so we were not being persecuted by the water authority for complaining :D turns out there is a broken 8 inch pipe that they cannot find as yet somewhere around Nong Sim, so they connected us to a spare 6 inch water pipe whilst they investigate.. ( a spare pipe ready to go, just in case of emergency's.. amazing !! )

night times we place candles on every table and dim the lighting to create a more romantic, relaxing setting and this has been well received by our customers .. if i could source a supplier of cheap candles i think turning off all outside lighting and illuminating the terrace entirely by candle light would look quite spectacular ... especially in our current location

our ever expanding frozen range of no frills take home ready meals now amounts to about 5% of our business and has seen us supplying a few local businesses with easy to cook food . and a great low cost for large portion sizes

overall business is lower than the previous few months , but with the help of our regular all Thai parties, we are still able to maintain levels of business far greater than in our old location.. last night for example we did 21 covers on 5 tables but the customers were all Thai .. compared to around 50 covers each evening when "high season" was here :D

anyway - my dreams of becoming a writer wont be realised today as i have typers cramp

dont forget its the exceptional Bookhouse Sunday Roast Lunch with complimentary drink served all day today, so maybe see you later

thanks

Do you, by chance, know if the electricity rates are tiered (likely, I think..)? Does the electric meter reader decide which rate category a customer falls under?

LilRed,

i do know electric costs have different rates per unit depending on whether commercial or domestic usage.
our home electric bill is only around 700baht per month ( we dont open the aircon at home and are only at home late evening because of work ) where as our business is around 20k per month with no aircon yet .

stands to reason if our water meter reading guy decides a business should pay more for water then the electric man can do the same . even though our rate was reduced again for water after we complained of high bills we were told if we use more than 1000 units it will go onto the next band

i,m assuming your question is because you have seen a big hike in your electric costs?
i will dig out the 2 bills ( home and business ) and post what each unit is costing later.

I understand that there are 3 bands in the electricity scale.
Domestic which was 3.5 baht a unit (for a long time) but went up to 3.9 last month & I believe, will go up to over 4 from this month on.
Light Commercial which has also just gone up & is now just over 5.5 baht a unit. I am not sure if that is increasing again this month or not.
Heavy Commercial which has been 10.5 baht a unit for a long time. I am not sure if that has been upped in price, but I imagine so.

As far as I understand the electricity company set the banding & any alteration to it must be done through them, rather than via the meter reader.
