The British Open

Postby polehawk » July 20, 2009, 12:41 am

Where are the golfers?

Great tournament ending in a four hole playoff between 59 year old Tom Watson and Stewart Cink. Broadcaster says if Watson wins it will be the greatest single achievement in the history of sport. Quite a proclamation.

Brit Westwood and Aussie Goggin were in the running up until the last couple of holes. American Watson missed a medium putt to force the playoff with fellow Yank Cink.

Alas, it was not destined for Watson, a member of the geriatric set, to win this major championship just short of his 60th birthday. A victory would have been as remarkable as George Foreman winning the heavyweight title at the age of 45 with a knockout of Michael Moorer. Cink won the four hole playoff handily after Watson finally wore down after his gallant effort.

Congratulations to Stewart Cink, 2009 British Open Champion.

Polehawk, there is no such thing as The British Open. It's called, "The Open".

Next your be telling me the USA are calling their golf tournament, "The Open", instead of ,"The American Open". :D

The Open

Postby polehawk » July 20, 2009, 6:57 pm

Galee, rumors were circulating that The Open WAS renamed The American Open since us yanks have won it 42 times so wanted to show proper respect to the hosts by calling it The British Open.

I do stand corrected, of course. It is THE Open. We already have enough on our plates with The Masters, US Open and the PGA Championship majors.

Certainly a remarkable effort by Watson who must count himself very unlucky not to have won it (still a nice sum to tuck away for his pension though :D ).
Congratulations to Cink.....
Tiger continues to struggle since returning from injury, but not qualifying for day 3 & 4 must have been a bit of a blow to his pride..
