The Woes of Internet Connections in Udon!

Postby semperfiguy » January 10, 2012, 5:05 pm

For the past 10 months I have used Udon TV for high-speed internet (7mbps) and cable TV for only 845 Baht per month including VAT. The service is generally excellent except that at least once a week it goes completely out for 1-20 hours, and it never fails that the blackout is just before I have to conduct some important business by internet.

So today out of sheer frustration I went to the main office of AIS intent on buying the Air Card Modem with a sim card...just as a back-up for those temporary cable outages. 1,190 baht for a new modem to stick in the USB port and another 100 baht per month to give me 30 hours of internet usage per month. This seemed a perfect solution to my temporary problems. Thank God I took along my laptop and asked the girl to download the program and test everything after I paid all the fees. For over one hour we sat there in the main office and could never connect to a single website. The clerk had the nerve to suggest that we were getting some interference by being inside the building. Then she wanted to use the modem on her own computer to convince me that it would work. If course, it failed to work on her's as well.

I politely asked for my money back, and after getting an OK from her supervisor I was given a refund and was out the door. Just wonder how many poor souls buy those Air Cards and get them home only to discover that the service is crap!

Does anyone have any suggestions for a similar Air Card service that might actually work in Baan San Sa-Ran just east of the Ring Road?

I've used one of these, no problems apart from being a little bit slow. Maybe it's because my soul is not so poor :D

True works good in udon. Dtac too. If you have a smartphone witch supports thethering you dont even need a 3g modem. Android is better then iphone since they let you share the phones 3G connection with an built in wifi hotspot, The iphone need you too connect the cable. Sheeper then having to buy a 3G dongle too

Semper,

I purchased a Dtac dongle (same price as your 1-2-call one) and it worked Ok ---I lived near Maliwan Villas if you know where that is.

I have since moved back to the Pattaya area and the Dtac Dongle didn't work at my current location in Pattaya. Someone suggested I try a 1-2-call sim (In the Dtac dongle) and like magic it works fine here in Pattaya.

In summary---it is my opinion that that the phone services (1-2-call---Dtac---True Move all use different towers sometimes and other times they share towers. In my case the Dtac tower was to far away for a decent signal but the 1-2-call tower was a little closer and that is why my 1-2-call sim card (in the Dtac dongle) works.

Apparently (and experts please correct me if I am wrong) but a Dongle is a Dongle--and one can use any of the local sim cards in any Dongle. It doesn't matter which sim you use as long as it is a Dtac/1-2-call or True Move Sim.

But that still doesn't solve your problem because you still don't know if the Sim will work at your house...Hell the Sim card you had in the store with the sales staff may even work at your house....Maybe the store is in a bad location.

I hope this helps

If you can use a modem with other then the one operator you bought it from depends on if its locked or not. Most modems are locked to a specific provider but there is lots of unlocked ones too.
