This is scarey!!

I would take an ''educated'' guess and say that it is the direct result of not practicing ASEPTIC TECHNIQUES!!Simple catararic removal surgury with these results??? [-X [-X And this is a teaching hospital?? [-X [-X

Infection after surgery leaves 7 blind in Khon Kaen

Up to seven patients have lost sight in one eye while two have been left completely blind after undergoing cataract surgery at the Khon Kaen Hospital. Some 25 patients underwent cataract surgery in the hospital between December 14 and 16.

Soon after the surgery was completed, the eyes of 11 patients were found to be infected. After administering immediate treatment, the hospital sent nine of the affected patients to the Srinagarindra Hospital, also located in Khon Kaen; while one was sent to a hospital in Nakhon Pathom at the request of relatives and one continued receiving treatment at the Khon Kaen Hospital. Of the 11 patients, the eyes of two patients had to be removed, while five lost their eyesight.

So far, four of the 11 patients have recovered satisfactorily, though six have been allowed to go home and the rest are still being treated at the Khon Kaen Hospital.

nkstan, Yes it is scary and as you said probably due to poor sterilization of the surgical tools and not taking pre-op precations. My Daughter (18 yrs old) is scheduled for cataract surgery next week in one eye and the first thing she got from thr optomologist was a script for antibiotic eye drops that she must use 4 times the day prior to surgery and for 2 days after.

Khon Kean Hospital is on the outer ring road near the airport.

Srinagarind Hospital is the teaching hospital at Khon Kean University. It's the hospital the patients were sent to after their eyes became infected.

systematic failure, due to lack of aseptic tecniques, sterilising between patients of the microscope ?? and its plastic covers replaced ?? resuing of instruments ?? Surgeons hand washing between every patient ? Replacing their sterile gloves between procedures ???? or just waiting for the next patient to be wheeled in .

I reported here some months ago about poor nursing standards and aseptic techniques in Udon, and KK has a major outbreak with a very tragic loss of vision for many patients.

What u dont read is all the infectious control issues that dont make the news.

It just confirms to me, to pay the extra and get a higher level of care in some places.

How much is your life worth ?

Private Hospitals .... F#CK "em ....
Took the T/W into the one on the cross roads for Tesco/Nong Khai for stomach pains a couple of years ago because she was pregnant ... they charged me ฿9000 for the consultation/scans etc. etc. and said nothing was wrong because she had aborted and just needed to come in the following week for a D and C ( Dilate and clean? Wazza can explain better! ) Had a bad feeling ( My mum's a Dr. so I took her to the government hospital ) and they confirmed my fears that she had an ectopic pregnancy and had to be operated immediately to save her life
Last year she was pregnant again!.... This time she passed out due to internal hemorrhaging ( self aborting )and her friend made sure I took her to Wattanna :-k ... They had her for 3hrs and could not diagnose the problems ( even though I told them what the problem was! ) ... gave me a bill of ฿6000 and wanted to transfer her to the government hospital! .... Another life savin' operation was performed within 1hr of being admitted!!!! .....
In a nutshell ... If you or your T/W, T/G are sick ..... DON'T GO PRIVATE!

The first problem was sorted with a 7 day stay in hospital with 1 operation plus meds at a cost of ฿3500 ... the second was FREE! because she transfered her I.D. to an Udon address so she qualified for free meds!

Private Hospitals? ... F#CK'EM! ... Bunch of ##########!!!!

Disinfecting solution blamed for eye infections that blinded 10 Khon Kaen patients

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakin ... fections-t

Disinfecting solution has now emerged as prime suspect for serious eye infections that have blinded as many as 10 patients at the Khon Kaen Hospital.

"There are signs of contamination in the remaining solution," Dr Weerasak Anutangkoon said Monday.

He is the chief of the hospital's ophthalmology division.

Weerasak was speaking after the results of lab test on the remaining disinfecting solution came out.

"We will refer the results to a fact-finding committee (appointed by the Public Health Ministry)," he said.

He believed the fact-finding committee would conclude on the case soon.

Um, well I don't really beleive that statement, especially after the fact that they are paying the victims allegedly only 300,000 baht a paltry sum for ones sight

drug company

What drug company it is the bloody disinfectant that was the problem, an error in the hospital maybe a supplier mistake or even a manufacturer, but I do feel in this instant the Govt should foot the bill nad they can sue the drug company/manufacturer
I do hear that they have re-started eye ops on KK again.

They are saying the contamination was IN the solution, that makes it likely at the point of manufacture ?? Or it was opened and allowed to become contaminated and then reused. Cost cutting does create the reuse of opened medications, where single use only is on the label.

In most countries the patients are the ones who sue the supplier of the faulty product. Its called Product Liabilty etc. Not sure of Class Action is allowed in Thailand ???

Im not sure if you can sue the Thai Health Department ?? but also do they have the ability to use subregation on behalf of a public patient and sue the supplier.
