Time for an ethic clean up on this forum?

Postby kjellsnell » October 16, 2011, 7:12 pm

it is time to start discussing the ethics of this forum.

I see more and more deplorable behavior on the forum and I wonder if it's just me who reacts to how some people behavein here? There are sometimes shameful slanders, direct threats, insults and bad language that I do not think belongs in an open forum such as this. How do we get rid of this type of behavior where people are threatening and talking **** about each other?

There must be some way to remove people who have an improper behavior and that do not follow the ethical rules actually are. If we throw out those who do not have a suitable behavior, how do we do that they do not come back under another alias? Can register the IP number or are there other better ways to keep bad behavior off this forum?

What do you think LEE .... maybe need a little ethical council of you and a few members who seriously take hold of these issues?

Regards Kjell
These days life seems pretty good and I eagerly look forward to the continuation!

I agree with Kjell.

It seems to me that a number of people are in competition with each other in the use of bad, faul language and name-calling. Often there are also low level rants against people who are not in a position to defend themselves. I guess that'when looking at these poster's age, they should know better than to behave like children.

For the record. This is a comment on people's behaviour and not an attack at the person. And I think that that should be a rule on this forum (at least a social rule).

Time for an ethic clean up on this forum?

I am surprised by this thread...
The way against unwanted or unwarranted posts is crystal clear...
Report the Post
The moderators will then take the necessary action against the post & the poster, if necessary.
The moderation team cannot read every post. Moreover they will often allow a thread to continue & develop even if it is 'near the edge' because none of them have any desire to censor others except where the Forum rules are clearly being broken.

In my view this forum strikes a pretty good balance when it comes to moderation, and I do not support any further censorship/banning than currently applies. Where that balance should lie is a constant question for the admins/mods of each and every forum on the net.

Bad eggs/trolls/spammers generally get found out pretty quickly here, and either through peer pressure, or moderation, leave of their own accord - in several cases, to end up on another forum which better suites their posting style and views of the world.

As Bob says, if you are offended by a particular post, or poster, there is an easy remedy.

I recommend that the knuckle heads that cant read whats on the title of this sub forum: "udonthani topics only" should get a warning!
They post international crap not pertaining to Udon that should go into the open general discussion area, and get a mild warning and are hard headed and repeatedly do it over and over.

I can see where Kjellsnell is coming from. But it`s also up to us, not being sucked in by a troll. Obvious trolls should be treated with a no reponse policy. [-( Flamers should not get any replies, even if his next post was a normal post. =; Yes, easier said than done, I know.
Oh yes, I wish a flamer would be taken out sooner by the mods. No second chances, don,t let him destroy or lock a tread, just do away with him.
Before I have not paid attension to the "report" button, thanks Bob for pointing it out. Now I will use it instead of getting myself into a fruitless discussion. Will be interesting to see if it will make a change.

No offense intended, and it isn't directed to you but to forum members in general.

I think that the problem is that it's usually the flamers who blame others for being flamers. And the people who feel offended easily, usually are the same people who offend others easily. And that it's the ignorant people who blame others of being ignorant.

I have also noticed that a lot of people don't practice what they preach, at one point some think of themselves as religious people, and at other times they start a war with other forum members and use degrading language.

IMHO, the moderation is better here than other sites. In that sense, I have few qualms because I make use of the scroll wheel on my mouse when I see the name of certain posters in some threads because I know they only post garbage. It does wonders for improving the experience here.

That said, we all know when a poster clearly crosses the line (threats of violence, vulgarity, bigotry, etc.). I am a supporter of moderator intervention in those cases; and I cannot recall a thread which has not been cleaned up after moderators have been made aware.

Moderation is obviously a fine balance, too far one way , its ineffective, too far the other it becomes censorship.I think overall the present level is about right. However I must stick to my original view that as a mainly adult forum moderation shouldn't be necessary. Surely at our age we have learnt how to moderate our own behaviour . Sadly time has proved me wrong . I must say however I rather like the latest trend of giving 2 hours notice of deletion. It gives every one a chance to see who the offenders are before being consigned to oblivion .Whether it was a one off or a change in policy it was a good idea . \:D/

Time for an ethic clean up on this forum?

Postby Khun Paul » October 17, 2011, 9:48 am

TB I agree 100%, yes it is true surely as adults moderation would be required under normal circumstances in the minority of posts.
however as with all things there are times when people feel that their views are sacrosanct and any deviation is unacceptable thereby causing fricton and then the post goes into a downward spiral.

most of us offer words of pacification but to some that is a red rag to a bull and they bite ...oh do they bite. but in the normal course of events I do feel that the moderation is at the right level. As for making it more ethical, to some that word is one of wonder and to others it can breed censorship so as it is at the moment it is about right. one can do what bob suggests or one can ignore the post and not read it again. the power of the human digit is wonderful using it carefully can not only work but also keeps the blood pressure down.

It would be great if the 'report post' function was used a little more, it gives members more control over the forum content and highlights dodgey posts that we may have missed. It also gives us a better idea what members feel about about certain forum content.

I'll move this thread over to the 'support' forum. ;)
