patriot, I have always been a bit disappointed with any of the 'birthday' cakes I have tried in & around Udon - the sponge has always been a little dry & the icing mega sweet. I haven't tried the recommended shop above (strange thread to place it in though   ).
Personally I would buy candles & then get a cake from Swenson's :D :D

I've always enjoyed the baked goods from Miss Cake (no, it's not a bar, even though it would be a good name for one ;) ).
Miss Cake is located on Prajak Rd. map ref: K-12. Just past the klong, on the left, as you are heading towards the Clock Tower. They have a small sign, so drive slow and keep your eyes open. :D

Also, Meh Yah Restaurant has some good ice cream cakes.

The Sofitel in Khon Kaen has a spectacular selection of all bakeries and cakes etc

Its under renovation right now and soon to be improved again, according to the staff there last week.

Bit far for a birthday cake though as they wouldnt last the trip to Udon, The Sweet Police would have knocked it off by Nam Pong.

One of the best cakes I've sampled here was provided by KFC when they catered our daughters birthday. I don't know where they sourced the cake from but they will order it if requested.

Thanks for all the suggestions above.

I have gone for a cheesecake from Good Everything; should do the trick, not sure if the village ladies will appreciate it though !!
