I think they have different rules in different cities, let alone countries... :D
As it has been a while I visited the Hull website (in UK) to say what they are saying these days. They actually list these as the reasons for an O visa. Note only the last actually has a age attached to it (50 years). Note also that they are now saying that an O can be used for tourism purposes - as they do not currently get paid for issuing Tourist visas...

I just checked and I can no longer find any reference to the "O" visa only the "OA" so maybe the "O" is no longer available.

The O is issued for "other" reasons. That is often marriage or family member being Thai. Some Honorary Consulates will issue for visitation with 'friends' in Thailand.

Thanks for all the help. No one batted an eye at the fourth consecutive visa so all was well. The passports got two more pages left so I am good for one more trip to Laos. Then time for a new passport. And no, not over 50, but I will see what they say about the "O" visa. Once again thanks for the speedy replys.

Just to satisfy my intrigue in this matter, how many consecutive tourist visas can you have, endless amount of them? so no point having a yearly visa if these tourist visas are not restricted for longterm residents in Thailand and will remain free for a very longtime I presume.Would have thought age is not important, anyone can apply for a tourist visa and if endless could stay here indefinitely.
How does the consulate in Vientianne make any money?

The consulate in Vientiane is not that, it is an Embassy - therefore its staff & expenses are fully funded by the Thai nation - same as every other country's Embassy. I think the UK Embassies are one of the few that see it as a money making scheme - especially in regard to it own citizens.
At the moment you can indeed get multiple Tourist visas from the Thai Vientiane Embassy for as long as you like' The Embassy in Penang has decided to work to slightly different rules to Vientiane - that could change tomorrow, either way :D :D
It costs money for the Laos visa (1,500 baht) , you have to spend 1 night in Laos, leave Thailand every 60 days - or extend at the Immigration office for a further 30 days (cost 1,900 baht) etc. So I guess there are still large advantages to having a 1 year visa.

as Bob says, seems to endless at this point in Vientiane, a definite advantage, if falling thru the cracks, whether because of lack of marriage, age, sufficient finances to full fill extended visa requirements. but if possible, and qualify, a bit more paperwork, an extended visa is simple to acquire and no need to exit every 60/90 days.
