Heartland Institute Exposed: Internal Documents Unmask Heart of Climate Denial Machine

Internal Heartland Institute strategy and funding documents obtained by DeSmogBlog expose the heart of the climate denial machine – its current plans, many of its funders, and details that confirm what DeSmogBlog and others have reported for years. The heart of the climate denial machine relies on huge corporate and foundation funding from U.S. businesses including Microsoft, Koch Industries, Altria (parent company of Philip Morris) RJR Tobacco and more.

We are releasing the entire trove of documents now to allow crowd-sourcing of the material. Here are a few quick highlights, stay tuned for much more.

-Confirmation that Charles G. Koch Foundation is again funding Heartland Institute’s global warming disinformation campaign. Greenpeace’s Koch reports show the last time Heartland received Koch funding was in 1999.

The January 2012 Confidential Memo: 2012 Heartland Climate Strategy states:

We will also pursue additional support from the Charles G. Koch Foundation. They returned as a Heartland donor in 2011 with a contribution of $200,000. We expect to push up their level of support in 2012 and gain access to their network of philanthropists, if our focus continues to align with their interests. Other contributions will be pursued for this work, especially from corporations whose interests are threatened by climate policies.”

A number of Internal documents of the 'Heartland Institute' have been leaked, revealing who donates money to them and what it was spent on (mainly supporting Climate sceptics, who are being paid up to $11,600 a month and other climate sceptic bodies such as the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC)). Between 25% and 58% of their annual funding come from one source (the Anonymous Donor) who appears to specifically fund Global warming related work. The Heartland Institute admit that the level of their support for Climate scepticism is mainly dependant on this one donor. Who this donor is, is not known, but he has contributed millions of dollars each year and would appear to influence policy. This level of support and influence could be breaking US tax exemption laws. One of their projects is to get modules they design on Global Climate into the school curriculum.

In the UK. the Global Warming Policy Foundation is also funded Anonymously. So we do not know who is funding this work, how much influence they have or why.
Currently it is genrally agreed the key "Heartland Document" is a fake, a little more time will confirm this.

2012 Heartland Climate Strategy: http://www.desmogblog.com/sites/beta.de ... rategy.pdf

It is also confirmed that Desmogblog posted the fake document within 1 hour without confirming its accuracy with the Heartland Institute. Typical journalistic standards for this calbre of warmist alarmist.

It also seems alarmist in chief Peter Glick is the chief suspect for the forgery and, if Heratland is true to its word, should be contacted by the FBI shortly to provide a please explain.

http://spectator.org/blog/2012/02/17/th ... forgery-of

One can only wonder at the mental state of the eco-loon nutjob hippies whose fevered imagination created a Koch Bros conspiracy from a fake document. It seems they see "big oil" everywhere at the slightest promting, despite the facts suggesting otherwise. It would be funny if it was not so sad. Yes folks, they walk amongst use.

The need to forge such a document shows the desperation the eco-loon nutjob hippies will go to in order to support a failed theory. If the AGW case is so strong, and the remaining (genuine?) Hearland documents so damning, why is it necessary to forge a document to support their case? I can only guess the case is weak or false.

As for funding the sceptics - the amounts of money directed to this side is piffling compared to the billions spent by the alarmists. The lesson learned is the realists, who see AGW for the scam it is, have beaten the alarmists and their corrupt message with a fraction of the funds and resources.

Desperate warmists are trying to re-attach the AGW dead parrot to its perch using "Koch Bros Glue".

Beaten by the science they revert to conspiracy theories. But expected from eco-loon nutjob hippies.

Wonderfull bird the Norwgian Blue. Beautiful plummage. But dead none the less.

Concerned Scientists Reply on Global Warming

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... 29540.html

In summary, science progresses by testing predictions against real world data obtained from direct observations and rigorous experiments. The stakes in the global-warming debate are much too high to ignore this observational evidence and declare the science settled. Though there are many more scientists who are extremely well qualified and have reached the same conclusions we have, we stress again that science is not a democratic exercise and our conclusions must be based on observational evidence.

The computer-model predictions of alarming global warming have seriously exaggerated the warming by CO2 and have underestimated other causes. Since CO2 is not a pollutant but a substantial benefit to agriculture, and since its warming potential has been greatly exaggerated, it is time for the world to rethink its frenzied pursuit of decarbonization at any cost.

"Concerned Warmist" Peter Gleick confesses to stealing Heartland documents, but not to forging one ..... at least not yet. How low will a warmist go to save the planet? More noble cause corruption?

If the case for AGW is so strong why is it necesary for warmists to lie, cheta and steal?

I look forward to the court case.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/peter-h-g ... 89669.html

FEBRUARY 20, 2012: Earlier this evening, Peter Gleick, a prominent figure in the global warming movement, confessed to stealing electronic documents from The Heartland Institute in an attempt to discredit and embarrass a group that disagrees with his views.

Gleick’s crime was a serious one. The documents he admits stealing contained personal information about Heartland staff members, donors, and allies, the release of which has violated their privacy and endangered their personal safety.

An additional document Gleick represented as coming from The Heartland Institute, a forged memo purporting to set out our strategies on global warming, has been extensively cited by newspapers and in news releases and articles posted on Web sites and blogs around the world. It has caused major and permanent damage to the reputations of The Heartland Institute and many of the scientists, policy experts, and organizations we work with.

A mere apology is not enough to undo the damage.

In his statement, Gleick claims he committed this crime because he believed The Heartland Institute was preventing a “rational debate” from taking place over global warming. This is unbelievable. Heartland has repeatedly asked for real debate on this important topic. Gleick himself was specifically invited to attend a Heartland event to debate global warming just days before he stole the documents. He turned down the invitation.

Gleick also claims he did not write the forged memo, but only stole the documents to confirm the content of the memo he received from an anonymous source. This too is unbelievable. Many independent commentators already have concluded the memo was most likely written by Gleick.

We hope Gleick will make a more complete confession in the next few days.

We are consulting with legal counsel to determine our next steps and plan to release a more complete statement about the situation tomorrow. In the meantime, we ask again that publishers, bloggers, and Web site hosts take the stolen and fraudulent documents off their sites, remove defamatory commentary based on them, and issue retractions.

It seems Mr Gleick was to lead the AGU task force on ethics and integrity. I am not confident of his impartiality and suspect the taskforce would conclude that AGW is "real" and all deniers are liars, cheats and thieves. ..... at least thats what would have happened ...... yes, Mr Gleick lectures deniers, lukewarmers, and anybody who does not agree with his position, on ethics and integrity.

The case for AGW is falling apart, time to put this farce to rest. And they wonder why people dont trust these "scientists".

AGU’s new task force on scientific ethics and integrity begins work

Peter Gleick
Pacific Institute, Oakland, Calif., USA

Randy Townsend
American Geophysical Union, Washington, D. C., USA

In support of the new strategic plan, AGU has established a new task force to review, evaluate, and update the Union’s policies on scientific misconduct and the process for investigating and responding to allegations of possible misconduct by AGU members. As noted by AGU president Michael McPhaden, “AGU can only realize its vision of ‘collaboratively advancing and communicating science and its power to ensure a sustainable future’ if we have the trust of the public and policy makers. That trust is earned by maintaining the highest standards of scientific integrity in all that we do. The work of the Task Force on Scientific Ethics is essential for defining norms of professional conduct that all our members can aspire to and that demonstrate AGU’s unwavering commitment to excellence in Earth and space science.”

And now .... the latest from the eco-loon nutjob hippies:
Climate change will shake the Earth

A changing climate isn't just about floods, droughts and heatwaves. It brings erupting volcanoes and catastrophic earthquakes too

Did you actually read the article? mainly it was talking about geological evidence of increased earthquakes and volcanic eruptions associated with the end of the last ice age, and why they are probably linked. He does say that as the ice sheets are gone, further events of this kind only might happen. But he quotes that Alaska is suffering increasing isostatic readjustment and is experiencing more quakes (let's just assume this is correct, because I am not about to waste my time checking that; but i assume geologists in Alaska would know).

As he says, the Earth is a complicated beast and sometimes it's reaction is not what we expect. Just like the latest news, the cold snowy winters of the last few years have now been linked to the decline of the Arctic sea ice:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17143269

But the Guardian article did come on a bit thick at the end with the emotional stuff, but after all it is a newspaper article, have to exaggerate a bit or no one reads it - bit like your emotional responses :-k :-k

So, you are actually trying to defend the the proposition that climate change (whatever that means) brings erupting vocanoes and earthquakes. Oh deary me. Something moronic about that response. Talk about defending the indefensible.

By the way - how is the great Heartland and Big Oil conspiracy going. I suppose you will try to defend Peter Gleick next - the one who released the fake papers that led to your posting about the - shock horror - Koch Brothers.

Emotional response - haha :^o

Ironically the perpetrator of the Heartland fraud, Dr. Peter Gleick, was head of the science integrity task force of the American Geophysical Union and has often lectured on the subject. Lest one might be disposed to perceive the Heartland episode as only a momentary lapse in judgement by a frustrated overwrought individual, the widespread justification and approval from the alarmist community of both Gleick’s actions and those of the Climategate researchers removes any doubt that an utter corruption of scientific integrity is in fact endemic in climate research.

In terms of absolute certainty despite only weak and conflicting evidence, an expressed desire to severely punish any dissent, a willingness to ignore normal ethical constraints and to indulge themselves in self-stimulated paroxysms of righteousness, the climate alarmists have managed to rival the extremes of religious fundamentalism. Starting with the handicap of an extended exposure to scientific rationality, their achievement in overcoming reason and evidence has been remarkable. When the time comes for assessment of responsibility in the decline of Western civilisation, it would be a shame if the proponents of postmodern philosophy in the academy did not finally receive the recognition they so justly deserve.

So, I guess you didn't read the Guardian article from your reply. Mainly about the knock on effects of isostatic readjustment. And no comment on the 'colder winters' caused by Arctic warming? As for the Heartland case, more about the biter bit reaction threatening legal action than any evidence produced. Didn't see the deniers complaining about the Climategate hacked emails as being unethical.

Gleick committed fraud - he impersonated a company director to obtain documants illegally.

Gleick has admitted this. There is no comparison to climategate. Even the AGU ackowledges what he did is completely wrong.

Gleick "lectures" on ethics, but does not practice what he preaches. Like most Gaia worshipping eco-loon nutjob hippies, Gleick thinks the end justifies the means.

It is not OK to bang on about a non-existent "climate crisis" in order to gain money. That is simply rent-seeking behaviour.

And a quote from the article "The idea that a changing climate can persuade the ground to shake, volcanoes to rumble and tsunamis to crash on to unsuspecting coastlines seems, at first, to be bordering on the insane. "

Can you tell me how can a coastline be "unsuspecting"?

They should have left it at there and said no more - it is bordering on the insane.

Stop trying to defend the indefensible. It makes you look silly, bordering on the insane.

Climate science has claimed for 30 years that it affects the safety of hundreds of millions of people, or perhaps the whole planet. If it gets it wrong, equally, millions may suffer from high energy costs, hunger due to biofuels, and lost opportunity from misdirected funds, notwithstanding the projected benefits from as yet impractical renewable energy.
Yet, we have allowed it to dictate global policy and form a trillion dollar green industrial complex - all without applying a single quality system, without a single performance standard for climate models, without a single test laboratory result and without a single national independent auditor or regulator. It all lives only in the well known inbred, fad-driven world of peer review.

As AGW approaches death it will be interesting to see if the "water arguement" will replace it (as others on this thread have already tried to do).

"Water" will probably become Greenpeace's next alarmist meme to screw money from the gullible.

"Gleick is fully compromised, but will likely continue because of his claims about water. It’s the environmental vehicle replacing climate for achieving government control, nationally and internationally."

"Gleick’s unethical actions indicate he believes it’s an option and the end justifies the means. We are on notice, so diligence about all water resources claims is required."

I am glad to hear, looking at the Tim Ball links, that population, global warming, water and energy resources are not a problem. I wonder.... Tim ball says we only use 3% of the land anyway. interesting .....

Facts (approximate only) - there is about 4 acres of land for every human on the planet (say 20,000 sq yards). But we only use 3% - so we have 600 square yards each - abouta quarter of the size of my garden (ok, 4 of us, so thats alright). But only a fraction of my food comes from there. So something doesn't add up. And in 30 years the world population will be 9 billion or more.

Due to technology, we grow far more food than we would have been able to 100 years ago. But it depends on oil. How much oil do we have? going by proven oil reserves, and assuming consumption doesn't increase, we have 64 years. What then?

I think we should be concerned about a lot of things, but especially about lack of resources and pollution.

Many species are in danger of extinction, from global warming or just from other environmental changes and over exploitation. But never mind, as long as i have my SUV with air-conditioning, i won't notice. Just keep increasing production so my dividends go up.

Maybe, just maybe, technology will fix all these things - but currently their is little sign of that. I will be all right, because i will be long gone, but My kids.... will hopefully still be here in 70 years time. That is what i want to ensure; and it is a world fit to live in.

PEAK OIL

The death of peak oil

For years we have assumed that fossil fuel reserves were running out, that peak oil production had occurred some time ago and that it was only a matter of time before the oil price rose to such heights that energy-dependent economies would be crushed, starting with the United States.

In a way these assumptions have helped underpin the movement against global warming (that is, we’ll have to give up oil anyway since it’s running out, so we might as well make the best of a bad lot and embrace electric cars and wind farms and save the planet from climate change while we’re at it).

In fact the existence of vast reserves of oil and gas in shale formations, mainly in the United States, combined with the return of the oil price to $US100 a barrel without, so far, causing a global recession, is producing a profound transformation of energy markets.

Forget declining oil, there is a new global oil rush. The US has an estimated 2 trillion barrels of shale oil reserves – about 70 per cent of the world’s total and eight times the oil reserves of Saudi Arabia. The gas reserves, in the US, Australia and elsewhere, are vast.

One thing is for sure: the world isn’t running out of oil and gas any more.

Greenpeace, an organisation that started out with good intent, has, in my opinion, degenerated into a nasty little far left deep green mob of destroyers.

The Canadian government considers them eco-terrorists (Greenpeace leads the charge in preventing the Canadians from developing their resources).

New Zealand has removed chairity status from Greenpeace - and rightly so - they are not a charity.

And now Greenpeace has decided it will destroy the Australian economy by sabotaging the export of coal and other resources.

I thought it was the electorate of democratic sovergn states that decided where and when they develop their resources.

Apparantly not - it seems the unelected ecotards at Greenpeace have assumed that role for themselves.

And while Greenpeace bangs on incessantly about "big oil secret plans and funding", it seems they have their own secret plan to destroy a nations economy.

I wonder why Greenpeace are not doing the same in China and Saudi Arabia? Perhaps its because they would soon cease to be.

I think the time has come for Greenpeace to be reigned in - they go to far.

Unelected and unaccountable - they attempt to control the fate of democratic nations.

Disgusting and indefensible.

A COALITION of environmental activists has developed an extraordinary secret plan to ruin Australia's coal export boom by disrupting and delaying key projects and infrastructure.

The strategy includes mounting legal challenges to up to a dozen key mines and exploiting the Lock The Gate movement against coal-seam gas to put pressure on governments to block mining.

A funding proposal for the Australian anti-coal movement, obtained by The Australian, declares that 2012 and 2013 are critical years to stop tens of billions of dollars of investment and says the aim of the strategy is to "disrupt and delay" projects "while gradually eroding public and political support for the industry and continually building the power of the movement to win more".

The document - which is believed to have been written by Greenpeace Australia Pacific's John Hepburn and CoalSwarm's Bob Burton - issues a call to arms for coal activists nationwide before the March 24 Queensland election and the next federal election.

The document names philanthropic consultant Sam Hardy and a foundation set up by Wotif founder and Greens donor Graeme Wood on the cover. It's believed Ms Hardy was consulted on some versions.

It outlines a pitch for up to $5.92 million that would be used to fund litigation to stop coal port expansions, major rail lines and new mines; to wage a "battle of Galilee" to stop "mega-mines" in central Queensland's Galilee Basin and expose it as a "globally significant carbon bomb"; and to discredit the NSW government's planning process for land use in the Hunter Valley that aims to determine how to allow mining and agriculture to co-exist.

At Galilee Basin, the group wants to drive up the costs and cause such extensive delays that the projects "run foul of a changing global coal investment environment", while in the Hunter Valley it hopes that more landowners will commit to "locking the gate" against coal.

As well as targeting NSW and Queensland, the group wants to stop Indian and Chinese companies from exporting from Western Australia and to stop brown coal being exported from Victoria.

The document puts the cost of hiring two lawyers for two years to run coal and CSG lawsuits in Queensland at $500,000.

Among the positions proposed are vacancies for campus organisers, interns - with a $40,000 intern stipend proposed - and $95,000 for a media adviser in Sydney.

Human Engineering and Climate Change

Yep - they want to "bio-engineer" future humans to cope with "climate change". Seriously!!! Our taxes at work. What next?

"In this paper, we consider a new kind of solution to climate change, what we call human engineering, which involves biomedical modifications of humans so that they can mitigate and/or adapt to climate change.

We argue that human engineering is potentially less risky than geoengineering and that it could help behavioural and market solutions succeed in mitigating climate change.

We also consider some possible ethical concerns regarding human engineering such as its safety, the implications of human engineering for our children and for the society, and we argue that these concerns can be addressed. Our upshot is that human engineering deserves further consideration in the debate about climate change
