Phones as predicted mass confusion

Thailand's mobile phones now 10-digit numbers - total confusion

BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): Last night Thailand's mobile operators changed all Thai mobile numbers from 9-digits to 10-digits numbers. The 9-digit based system will be intact until November 30, to make it easy for the customers.

But you don't need to do anything to continue to call out and receive calls, but you will need to edit your own phone book to include the extra "8" digit for Thai mobile phones.

A lot of confusion has occured because of conflicting information in the media. So here is the lowdown:

1. You do NOT need to visit any AIS, DTAC or True etc. service centre!

2. Your mobile number currently works with both the old number and the new number (until Nov 30, 2006):

Example:
If your old number was, for example: 01-5432109 your new number is now 018-5432109. Both will work until November 30, 2006 so no worries.

3. You propably have a lot of Thai mobile numbers stored in your mobile or SIM-card. You are advised to manually change all Thai mobile numbers to include the "8" as in the example above.

(You can of course visit your mobile shop to do this for you, but it's not mandatory.)

4. Number presentation (CLID): You might not yet see the new "8" when someone is calling you from another Thai mobile, but it may work within a few weeks.

5. Soon you will receive a SMS message from your mobile provider to change your SMS settings to include the extra "8" in your phone setting for "SMS Service Centre", but you can leave that for the next few weeks.

6. Please inform you international phone friends and collegues of the new situation. As the example above, you international phone number was +6615432109 - now it is +66815432109

The alteration of local mobile phones to the 10-digit system is to cope with the kingdom's expanding demand for mobile phone services in coming years, according to the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC).

I think George was a little confused with his post over on TV in all honesty, is the 8 meant to be before of after the initial 1 in the number??

I was always led to believe it was going to be before so the 2nd example given in the quote 'should' be correct, but please dont quote me on that... :?

Yes it is 8 before 1 in the above example. I've been calling my wife using the new format (8+9 xxx-xxxx) for over a week now and works fine.

the number change

Postby FrazeeDK » September 6, 2006, 8:43 pm

too lazy to manually change all my numbers so took it to the Telewiz in Big C.. It took the lass about 5-6 minutes to reprogram it.. I verified the numbers were changed and walked off.. later that day I noted she'd changed the menu setting from English to Thai.. And now while I can read Thai a bit, darned if it didn't take me over an hour of cursing to get down to the right Pasa Angrit menu and change it back...

So, adding the 08.. No big deal. Reprogramming the phone.. No prob! Just know get them to change it back to English prior to leaving the store

Sorry, I hadn't spotted this thread with Ray's unquoted "quote" with the built in Thai Visa error.

The correct information is in this earlier thread:-

http://www.udonmap.com/udonthaniforum/v ... php?t=2027

....which as Papaguido says has the 8 before the 1 or the 4 or the 6 etc. E.g. 081, 084, 086 etc

No, I had spotted it was from Thai Visa (presumably it was thus their typo). It's just that the quote hadn't been put into the Quote markings, (by clicking on the Quote box at the top of the "Post a Reply" window), which makes more work for me and prevents me from "chilling out". :D

Ok Arjay now you have really opened the door. now you going to have to educate me

Why does it make more work for you? :?

Do you actually edit all the posts on the forum, if you do, boy I really feel for you.

I would propose this thought to you for your consideration, a public forum with no requiremets as to spelling ( thank goodness) no requirements as to grammer ( ditto) no requirements a to computer literacy ( another oh boy I can play to )

Might you be fighting windmills here?

I got an idea that little bike you got in Pucket, bring it down here I'll get the wifes 125 and lets go for village rides, much more fun

I don't know where this confusion comes in. I have 5 Sim cards in my house including 2 GPRS ones. I went to Big C, D'Tac and next door AIS and within 10 minutes all were changed. They were doing something on a computer terminal to change them, so not sure if you can DIY or not.

If you click your mouse on this thread, it should educate/enlighten you (ignore the last 2 postings about Mr Blobby). It's all about how and why to do "quotes", which you'll see below I've managed to master:-

To be honest the moderator team including myself rarely need to edit any posts. :D

I think there's only 1 windmill left now. :D

I'm off out today, had enough hassle from immigration the other day, so I'm taking a break and going off to chill out. :D

Good for you, thats the most important thing  The offer stands anytime you've got the number.

You know we all have apects at life that we are very good at, most of the things that I have real interest in I will stumble through and learn.

I can wire a basin Police Report in Detail that amazed most attorney's because of the detail. Very few mistakes in them. But that wa work adn waht I wa paid for.

When I got into serious investigations later in life. It was what I knew and could find not how I wrote that really mattered. we taped our reports then an excellent wordsmith, would type them. Careful not to change any meat.

For the wordsmith a good job, paid about eight hundred a week, for me about 2K a week. I could never do a good of a job a that peson in writing reports, but on the other hand that person could not do what I did.

So the point being is everyone should respect each others abilites and work together whenever it is possible.

So I respect your knowledge but I'm no longer working and have no interest in the subject, therefore I'm not going to learn it.

Village rides or learning to speak Thai lead the way I will follow

Phone took the wife about 30 seconds to get programing done at Lotus, I have to go to Big C and that is what I'm going to do. Yes I can follow the instructions and do it that way, but I will get confused and frustrated so why bother when I just go down there, pay no money and enjoy all the pretty girls while it is getting done.

I also fight windmills they are just different then yours, but only when I feel compelled and there is no other way.

So let me run amuck with my qoutes, nothing that I have to say is going to change the world, nor harm it.
