Important Notice - re Self Censorship + some Guidelines

Postby arjay » September 22, 2006, 8:57 pm

NOTE TO OUR MEMBERS:

All media was today 2006-09-21 ordered by ICT to exercise censorship of any news critical of the coup-makers and the new military regime. Offenders face up to six months in jail, a fine of up to Bt10,000, or both.

This also prohibits Udonmap from publishing such content. We kindly ask our members to refrain from posting sensitive political content, or anything that could be deemed to be critical of the new military regime.

We reserve the rights to delete content that could be dangerous for the operation of our website. We have to do a bit of self-censorship here so we don't get into trouble.

Thanks for your understanding.

Please note some additional guidelines have been added further down this thread.

The short answer is no, because I haven't got time. But if it helps put things in perspective, I've been through the 12 pages of the main thread in question and deleted 1 post of my own and about 4 words and one sentence from a couple of other posts, all without changing any meanings. :)

You don't have to go looking to see if any of your posts have been tampered with!!

I also tinkered with one post on the coup d'etat thread.

Maybe now you can see the advantage of having quotes in quotes, because if it was a recognised newspaper quote I was able to ignore it. And fortunately there were a heck of a lot of quotes! :D

So agreed, I think everyone was supportive of the move (the coup) anyway, so it hasn't been too onerous to review all the posts involved. Took about an hour. I was just looking out for anything that could be construed as critical.

:) It's a business to the owners and they need to run it as they see fit! They have a lot of time and investment to protect! Some of them seem to have almost no moderation and ,for me,become a waste of time!To each his own :)

19sep.org shut down

A Web board which invites netizens to post comments on the coup has been shut down, its founder said Friday.

Sombat Ngamboon-anong, who registered the 19sep.org, said he had been informed by the hosting service provider that the Web site had been closed at the order of Information and Communications Technology.

As this thread has some general information for members, I thought it would be sensible to use it to ask members if they would please keep the following points in mind when posting on the Forum:

1. Please try and avoid starting multiple threads on the same topic - (try and find an on-going thread on the same topic and post a reply to that).

[Otherwise it causes confusion and dilutes the answers, which are then spread around over 3 or more on-going topics. So nobody knows where to go for the full version/information].

2. Please try and keep on topic. It is then easier for others to follow, or to subsequently find/research information relevant to their enquiry or needs. Currently so many topics go way off topic.

3. Please try and avoid posting multiple short one-liners, of every thought that pops into your head. Put your thoughts together first, before posting one combined post. Multiple short posts make it difficult to follow what is being said and unfairly boosts "post counts". T

The above said, please don't stop the quick quips or witty "one-liners" which make this Forum so good. We all enjoy a little humour in our lives.

4. Please put quotes into "Quote boxes", so it is clear that you are quoting from a particular source. It avoids possible copyright issues and unfairly distorting "word counts". Also please ensure the source is clearly identified.

5. When replying to the immediately preceeding post, it is unnecessary to quote that same previous post everytime. Ok if you are responding to a much older post, or wish to respond to a particular piece from within a previous post, then yes, in that situation it makes sense to quote the piece you are referring to.

It would be appreciated if you try and keep these thoughts in mind. It makes it so much easier for everyone to "navigate" the Forum. :)

Thank you.

How very depressing this thread is. I for one won't be posting anything for a while under those terms.

:) I was reading your other 11 posts.I don't see anything there that the moderation requests would interfere with,You seem to be of high intelligence and seem to have vast experience in Thailand that would be of benefit to others.I hope you reconsider!Chok Dee
