England select Australian Born batsman

Australia-born Sam Robson selected in England's 12-man squad to face Sri Lanka

Australia-born opening batsman Sam Robson has been named in England's 12-man squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka.

The former Australian Under-19 player is one of three uncapped players in the group to play the first of a two-Test series against Sri Lanka, along with Chris Jordan and Moeen Ali.

Robson, who makes up Middlesex's opening partnership with Australian Test opener Chris Rogers, was born and raised in Sydney and played for Sydney South East, the University of New South Wales and Eastern Suburbs.

The 24-year-old's mother was born in England but Robson qualifies for selection based on residency, having moved to London in 2008.

Paceman Jordan has played 13 one-day internationals and seven Twenty20s for England, while all-rounder Ali has three ODIs and six T20s to his name.

Ashes star Ben Stokes missed selection as a result of a lack of playing time as he recovers from a broken wrist, meaning only five players from England's last Test against Australia in early January have kept their places.

The first Test starts at Lord's on June 12.

Team: Alastair Cook (captain), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Matt Prior, Sam Robson, Joe Root, Chris Woakes.

To steal a quote from Piggy Muldoon (look him up), or was it Will Rogers, every time an Australian cricketer leaves to play for the Poms, it lifts the average cricket DNA of both countries. :-"

Australian born who played or play for England Billy Murdoch, John Ferris, Sammy Woods, Albert Trott, "Gubby" Allen, Adam Hollioake, Ben Hollioake, Jason Gallian, Tim Ambrose and now Sam Robson can you name any more?

On the other hand twenty players who were not born in Australia have represented them at international (Test) level.

10 of those players were English (Charles Bannerman, John Hodges, Tom Kendall, William Midwinter, Percy McDonnell, William Cooper, Henry Musgrove, Hanson Carter, Tony Dell and Andrew Symonds), 3 were from New Zealand (Tom Groube, Clarrie Grimmett and Brendon Julian), 2 were from India (Bransby Cooper and Rex Sellers), 2 were from Ireland (Tom Horan and Tom Kelly) and there was 1 each from South Africa (Kepler Wessels), Scotland (Archie Jackson) and Sri Lanka (Dav Whatmore).

I think any cricketer should be allowed to play for whoever he wants to if he's gone through the proper qualification process. It doesn't matter where someone comes from, all that matters is their passion for the game and their desire to play.

So as an 18 year old he realises that he'll never be good enough to be an Aussie test player so he takes the easy way out and uses the Pommy connection to get a game there knowing that he will be a walk up start becuase they are crap. Too smart.
