How to copy bookmarks (Firefox)
My old laptop is getting a bit temperamental lately. As a precaution I've got my backups up to date, but does anyone know how I can copy a list of my Bookmarks (on Firefox) in order to copy/back them up onto another computer?
Also, are there any disk check & repair programmes recommended for checking my hard drive disk. Sometimes it won't boot up. I run the usual Tune Up Utilities and C Cleaner stuff, and disk defraggler and they are all OK.

Acronis springs to mind or perhaps the manufacturer of the hard drive will have their own program.
Bookmarks can be backed up or imported/exported ,the saved bookmark file i would imagine could then be copied to the new computer.

Yes, but where actually are the bookmarks listed? I've been through Prog files and Mozilla Firefox files, but can't seem to find them, to actually copy or "export".

Left Click "Bookmarks"
Left Click "Show all bookmarks"
Then the rest is on display for you to decide to copy, backup, etc.

from the computer I use:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.xxx\Local Settings\Application Data
copy the mozilla folder to a flash drive
from: C:\Program Files
copy the mozilla firefox to a flash drive
put the 2 folders into the same directories as your new computer
this way you take all your add ons, preferences and browser info.
if you need help cloning a hard drive, let me know by PM

As ting_tong indicates though RJ this back up method does not give you an exact replication of your FireFox account on a new computer.
Home Page, addons etc, are not covered this way.
His back up approach would certainly do that but you can also achieve a similar result by using Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition.

That, basically, is your firefox run from a USB drive.
Maybe not the best way of doing it if all your internet access is done from one computer but great if you use internet shops a lot.
BTW, the SeaTools prbgram does take a long time to run as it examines each individual sector of the disk.
If you are going to run it then it is best to ensure that you ask it to fix any problems it finds as well...

That's Ok, I found the bookmarks folder and have copied that.
With the Seatools prog it appears one has to download it and then burn it to disc before running the prog from the disc.

Arjay, If you are running a windows based software you can try the built in CHKDSK that runs with windows computer to disk check computer, following is how to do this (from earlier post)
"If you do not know how to run chkdsk here are the basic steps once you get the computer completely started. (This is using Windows 7 but should work with Vista and XP versions)
1. Click on the Windows start button, should be in lower left corner of P.C.
2. In the Search and Programs Files box enter CMD and hit return
3. A Black box should open With c: and maybe user name with a > at this prompt put in following CHKDSK /R (one space after CHKDSK) hit return
4. You should either get message saying chkdsk will be run at next restart or ask you if you want to schedule at next startup, if ask put in a Y and hit return, this should schedule CHKDSK
5.At this point restart computer and CHKDSK should run prior to getting to normal windows page. This may run for a long time based on your hard drive size, let it run. After completed restart computer to see if disk was fixed.
Hope this works"

Yes that is correct RJ.arjay wrote:With the Seatools prog it appears one has to download it and then burn it to disc before running the prog from the disc.
You also need to ensure that your computer will boot from a CD.
Start up your computer with the CD in the computer & it will boot to the SeaTools Menu.
Take it from there, but do select repair (I can't remember the exact words it uses, but it is fairly obvious) as well as scan. Otherwise you will have to repeat the complete exercise again to resolve any issues it finds.
They do a SeaTools for Windows, which you can run while in Windows. However to do almost anything to a disk you need to be out of Windows - even their own updates - so I don't especially recommend using it as it cannot do a complete job on the disk.
CHKDSK is OK if you have issues with files on the disk & can do some work on bad sectors, but it is nowhere near as thorough or all encompassing as SeaTools, which is written by the disk manufacturer Seagate.
