China has invested in building a huge trade center in Vientiane - they came with the money and constructions worker and moving fast forward - they want to make Vientiane to the trade place for the hole region.

I believe the Norwegians dumped a bunch of money into that land area about 12 years ago to transform it into a large city park! You see where that's gone... The Chinese have bought the country up there lock stock and barrel much to the dismay of the average Lao who isn't getting the big bucks from selling land or being in a position to "approve" all these transactions.. Next step... It was in the BKK the other day.. The big loan from China to build the standard gauge dual track railway from BKK to Nong Khai.. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... china-loan

Viang Chan does not have the population to become a world trade centre , or a regional hub, unless China opens up the floodgates and a number of their citizens move to Laos.

"World Trade Center" is merely a puffed up name for this planned business center and mall. As for Chinese moving to Lao, it has been happening for years.. The northern border areas have Chinese settlers and the Chinese workers coming to Vientiane to build various projects are slated to stay.. A "China Town" is being built in the marsh areas on the north side of Vientiane. Many of my Lao friends and acquaintances are quite angry about it but with the government up there, there's nothing they can do but complain quietly..

I wonder if all of the government people in Laos are Chinese as they are in Thailand, which might explain some of the China-friendly policy. Well, there is the close border to consider too.
I gather places like Luang Namtha and Phongsaly were actually part of China at one time and only the French Imperial intervention in Indo-china got some of this land for Laos. In any case, this helps to explain a lot of the Chinese influence in the north and the north-west of the country. Over in the north-east around Sam Neua, there is more of a Vietnamese presence than a lowland Lao population.
Fascinating country.
