Welcome to Udon Thani, Pol. Maj. Gen. Chaiyat Saitin

The 57-year-old Major General has been the new commander of Udon Thani police since September 2014. His last posting was in Nong Khai.
Commander Chaiyat stressed that he will ensure that foreigners do not have to fear. There will be reinforced patrols and cameras will be installed at important places.

Yea! :D

The new Chiefs comments, farangs need not fear the Police is something i never have, it is the lack of action and the uncaring attitude following incidents relating to or involving farangs I worry about .

I would suggest there is a verrrrrry long laundry list of things that need to be corrected in addition to the gambling dens and loan sharks here in Udon Thani. How about stopping the idiots who drive on the wrong side of the road or those who feel a red traffic light is just a suggestion to stop? How about the other idiots who feel they can make a U-turn on a red traffic light? Of course nearly all realize that helmets and a driver's license to operate a motorcycle are only required during daylight hours after 9:00AM and before 4:00PM in the afternoon. These are just a few of the problems. Apparently nothing much has been done in the traffic law enforcement department as the above is an ever increasing everyday occurrence.

Maybe I'm missing something , but how would clamping down on any form of illegal gambling benefit the general community , yet alone us Farang. Better to go after the law breakers Mike mentions, now they do endanger us all. :roll:

I presume by casinos the poster includes the serious card games commonly played in the housing estates full of mia farang.

I understand a lot of money changes hands in these games. Many of the losers will be farang wives losing baht hard earned by farang often in farangland. I understand this is a big problem.

man you're bloody right!
i personally know of some "cases" where farangs lost most of their savings because they were related to a mia addicted to gambling. and guess who ended up as the real looser:

[A] = the mia?
= the farang?
[C] = their kids?

the point is that such mia's don't ask for money before they go gambling. they go on credit (house, land, car, scooter, wtf) and when they run out of credit they come to beg their farang hubbies to clear their debts.
quite often they don't go gambling personally, they are engaged in a gambling circle and just put the money in.

all in all - this is a real problem. use your brain and say a straight no to gambling. it's no fun - it's a real tragedy.

always remember: it's easier in Udon Thani to get a "loan shark credit" than to open a bank account!

I think with the wholesale arrest of the CIB leadership for corruption and bribery that we will all see members of the bureaucracy starting to walk the straight and narrow.. if 3 and 2 star generals get put away and all assets confiscated, then those further down the food chain certainly will be in fear that they might be next!

It remains to be seen whether or not those accused actually see the inside of a cell. Quite frankly it would really surprise me as much as the mysterious "suicide" and speedy cremation (1.5hours later) of one of the jokers involved. I have never heard of anyone in this country being cremated 1.5 hours after they died. I don't supposed there might have been a "stand in" for the "good colonel"?

The illegal casinos are being raided and closed, I know this because my wife worked for a Thai friend of ours at an illegal casino for several months, the wages were good, the tips were very generous, and the hours fitted in nicely with her daytime schedule.
Anyway, she and the rest of the staff had to do a runner several weeks ago because the (new) police moved in. The casino is now looking for the right place to relocate. The casinos have no effect on Udon falangs whatsoever, If a falang's wife decides to gamble she doesn't need an illegal casino to do it.

Shortly after the take-over in May, a long-established underground lottery collection point on SriChomCheurn Rd (behind the jail) was 'shut down'. I thought it was a step in the right direction.....until my soup store vendor informed me all the customers were directed to a side door while things cooled down. And sure enough, a steel side gate with a small sliding door was used for collections.

The parents wont be complaining if their little darlings are found guilty.

But good to hear there are some listening to complaints and acting.
