Looking for a good SIMPLE digital camera

Postby businessman » October 24, 2005, 1:47 pm

My German "battery eating" camera has finally given up on life and now i'm on the look out for a new one.Any recommendations for a simple "point and press" job.

Sony have a promotion on currently and have a nice looking digital camera with Carl Zeiss lens and is 6xxx baht

I have to adopt the Thai favourite of putting xxxx's as I cant remember the exact price. Includes a carry case and you can't go wrong with a sony.

all I will say is you need mega-pixel mega-pixel mega-pixel mega-pixel mega-pixel - and the more mega-pixel you get the high the price.

..... and if you want to store all those mega pixels on your computer you'd better have plenty of mega or gigabyte storage available somewhere, they are expensive on memory :(

A little 2mb compact with decent zoom will do you for what you need imo.

I am just going to take the occasional snap to send via e-mail to the folks back home so not too many pixels would be the way to go i would think.

I have a Canon movie/photo it has to be six years old, photo's are about 3 mp, and when I compare them to other peoples, or if I want to print bigger than 6x4 - I find the quality not very good. Even when I post on web site quality is not as good as others. So I was thinking of getting still camera with min of 5mp. Prices have come down alot compared to what I paid six years ago. I keep trying to get TW interested, before I spend for something that will sit on the chair, most of the time.

2 million pixels are more than enough for the web and also standard size paper photos. If you're looking to enlarge your shots on paper then you may want 3-5 million pixels. More than 5 million pixels are not really needed by the average amateur photographer IMO. You only really notice the quality of picture the more you enlarge or zoom in.

I have a Canon Power Shot S2 1S. I did allot of research before purchasing it and it was the most popular choice on most digital camera websites a few months back. It's a cross between an SLR and a compact and allows you to manually override all settings or just point and shoot. A very creative camera IMO and a good zoom lens too. I like getting all arty with my pictures so this is a great camera to play around with.

I also have a simpler Nikon Coolpix 2500 (2 million pixels) which is a very simple camera to use and takes very good quality pictures, I would highly recommend for general use.

Marcus, a distinction has to be made between the quality of the picture that a camera can take and the size of that picture for e-mailing.
I agree with what Lee says about camera definition (so anything 2 meg and above is fine) I also agree with what Sean and tenbyboy say about having a optical zoom (as opposed to a digital zoom, which they all have)being a good option. But, in order to e-mail it, you have to save it. Some formats will give great detail but take up huge chunks of your disk space, some formats will give poor quality pictures when they are increased in size but take up virtually no space. How efficient the space/quality of a format is will be greatly influenced by the photo manipulating program that you use....so, buy a camera 2 meg or above with a good battery usage and a zoom. If you then do not think that the quality is good enough it is likely that you need a better photo editing program rather than anything else.

I can recommend the Vivitar 5385 takes beautiful sharp pics. 5mp so you can enlarge to 8X10 with no drop in quality. Small and compact only weighs 6oz. 3X optical zoom, 1.8" LCD display, automatic and program mode. A nice piece of kit. Look at the reviews on the internet, gets a good write up.
200 pics on a 512mb SD memory card.

The main problem i had with the German camera was that it was very delicate and not up to being abused by children and nosy relatives.I think i will go for a sturdy looking Jap job with over two million pixels.

Marcus,
The Vivitar camera I mentioned is identical to the Pentax Optio 50, same great optics, same specs, but with a differant badge.
