I have to admit to being a wimp. I played Rugby League from aged 10 to 23 and then Rugby Union from 24 to 27 while in the military. I wore football boots, long woolen socks, cotton shorts and a long sleeve jersey. I was a wimp because I had a pad on each hip, foam rubber half inch thick, eight by ten inches in length and width. This was for full body contact footbll at up to state level.

If you'd ever really watched an NFL game you wouldn't have to ask why they wear the padding and helmets. Ever see a wide receiver running at full speed get laid out by a cornerback? Ever see a quarterback get blindsided and pancaked by a 300 lb defensive lineman? I've watched a fair amount of rugby and Aussie Rules football, and they do mix it up, but it's not the same as the NFL.

Football... No not soccer... football requires skill... You must be able to kick it accurately, bend it trap it etc.

I admire the athleticism of soccer players. Like sprinters they are in great shape. They have great agility and skill with their feet. Quite frankly the game just bores me - too many long stretches without any action. I've watched it on TV and in person, even played a little bit when I was a kid (as most Americans do). I have given it "a chance" and it has failed to capture my interest. You enjoy it - fine. You probably also like milk in your tea. Vive la difference.

American football is a multi-faceted game - quarterbacks have to throw with strength and finesse and be able to take many hits, wide recievers have to run and catch and have great agility, linebackers have to have a rare combination of speed and power, kickers have to have a strong and accurate foot and nerves of steel. The game requires a wide variety of skill, not just the ability to run and juggle a ball with your feet.

It's good for you Brits to have something like that, something to take your mind off your "second banana" status to the US. I understand, it's tough always having to play "Robin" to our "Batman",

Nah, you got it wrong mate (a common mistake for you blinkered Yanks), the Brits are not 'Robin to Batman' more like the 'Brains to your Brawn' !!!
We tell you where the problem is, an you supply the hardware to sort it out !

Come on Guys, joking apart, you're not really a bad bunch (just the rest of the world that thinks so), enjoy your Independance Day, just remember that without the brits you wouldn't have one !!!

 Well said VicVegas!!Rugby and soccer are easier to understand after watching for awhile than American Football. Both are physically exhausting games and there are alot of injuries, although minor if compared to the injuries that would occur if American Football was played without pads.

The problem is most people seem to ''knock''what they don't understand if they can't grasp the subject!Combine that with the natural pride involved with those that have played a sport, develop a ''loving''of it , ''stir'' in some patriotic pride, and you get the ''knocking''type statements! Now add that to the mindset of a man that perceives a ''man'' as someone that should take his lumps and bruises without protection, but quick to call ''foul'',and has never taken a ''legal'' hit like those of American Football!Without the padding,AF would be unplayable except for ''touch or flag football which have the restrictive rules like Rugby!

American football is very complicated strategically, has lots of breaks for advertising and time outs! These put off people that are not used to ''breaks''.Americans have become conditioned to these breaks and have many different attractions combined to peak ones interest! If I had to watch AF on Thai channels and didn't understand the game,it would bore me to death!
So,don't knock it if you have not tried it or understand it!Or if you do knock it,don't be so serious

I hear in Japan they edit out all the breaks in American Football and its getting quite popular. I am Quite Biased towards our NFL as I am a season ticket holder of the Tampa Bay Buccanneers. Soccer is OK if thats your sport but it is a very minor sport in the USA.

Serious spinal injuries, concussions and knee injuries, just to name a few, have ended many American football careers and some lives. Watched the Monday Night game when Darryl Stingley, a wide receiver, was tackled by Jack Tatum, linebacker, and Stingley remained paralyzed with spinal injuries for the rest of his shortened life. Just an example. There have been many other players wheeled off of the field who never returned to play again. It would be even worse without the helmets and pads, carnage on the gridiron.

Still, a great sport to watch and it has replaced baseball as America's favorite pastime sport in the eyes of many.

Back to the original topic.....anyone go to the 4th of July bash last Saturday? If so, how was it? I wasn't able to go because my car needed some emergency work done at the dealer.

Hmmm!!!! Socccer, just kidding football. I have to agree there seems to be a lot of action in the game. however it seems to primarily in the stands not the field

Being a person who watches very little sports, with the exception of boxing and motorcycle racing. I think the answer lies in turning the camera around and viewing the fans.

In the end it really doesn't matter a long as your enoying what you watch.

Brits and the 4 th, it was you guys and many others nationalities that made America So if those ancesters had not stood up, The true Americans the Indian's at the time could care less what these strange folks were doing killing eachother.

I wonder how many Brits have now have American bloodlines in thier family trees?

Something tells me we are a lot more closely related then we realize at times.

In any event hope things went well for the 4Th, the innitial impact has worn off and now I know not to expect this annual celebration. I also have scrapped the idea of a Community Christmas party.

I still believe these were the highlights of the year. However, it takes an organzation with a common goal to do these sort if thing. To my knowledge the VFW was the only group organized well enough to complete the task. For all the in fighting it was a group that could carry out a common goal in these area. It may have just became to much of a burden, as the farrang population increased.

As was pointed out these guys are growing older and thing probably have become much more difficult for them. There is a trend for younger people getting involved.

However, the reason the VFW was succesful in these endeavors was the local knowledge they have. If a younger member took it on, the tendancy would probably try to organize the event in the same way they would have done in the states. That simply would increase the chances of financial failure.

One suggetion came out of the situation that I thought, very valid. Form a group and do it ourselves, we certianly have enough members here locally to do just that.

However having participated in these in the past, I can tell you it is no easy task.

We can still have the local social gathering, but how the local government would views a farrang orginazation beyond the VFW I don't have a clue.

But at this juncture if we want a Christmas party for locals, then it may be prudent to start thinking about how we are going to pull that off.

If the interest is not there then it simply will not happen.

Had some great times in the US including a trip to the Giant's Stadium to see Ireland beat Italy in the 1994 World Cup Finals. I also had a great night sharing a few beers and games of pool having the NFL Vs. Soccer discussion in a bar in Albuquerque during an NFL game while theatrically yawning every few minutes... :D

Needless to say I'm taking the pi55 now as I was then and as we say to each his own and all that. (Just try having an Eminem Vs. The Beatles debate with a teenager... :?).

Vive La Diff้rence indeed Vic... Hope no offence was caused and have a great day on the 4th.

No offense taken, just good natured sparring. Soccer fans wouldn't respect us if we didn't defend our sports. 8)

Stan, what would be the restrictive rules?

No tackling to neck and above.

No tackling when a player has two feet of the ground

No spear tackling

I am no expert in AF but I believe the same restrictions apply. Anything else is fair game.

When the last time you have seen a rugby player hit so hard the his body does a complete somersault in the air?Do you see headon tackles where both men are running full speed and the tackler drives his shoulder straight through the ball carrier lifting off his feet and driving him into the turf?Without pads and helmuts, not many people would get up from those type of tackles which are regular and completely legal in AF!

side note: Roy,road to kandihar is great! Thanks :D

I think we may have to describe the terms in bold. Suffice to say, when the player is hit, he is hit so hard, that his feet leave the ground and go one way and his head the other. And sometimes that helmet gets dislodged from the wearer as well.
